It just might have been a preview to this year’s 5A State Championship game, as the state’s top team teams in the division faced off in exciting fashion in the finals of this year’s Hoopsgiving pre-season tournament at Sunnyslope High School on Friday evening. Sunnyslope (3-1) would host in the event, and look to win the tournament championship again, after appearing in the 5A state finals the last two seasons, and winning the 2017 State Championship. Deer Valley High School (4-0) is our favorite this high school season to get there as well, as the team is absolutely loaded with…
Arizona high school student-athletes today do not know much about Arizona’s rich high school basketball tradition, but the state of Arizona has produced a large number of top college and professional players over the years. Sunnyslope High School (3-0), the defending 5A State Champions, are already rolling this high school season – sporting a very poised team that has done this before, several times. Led by the overall play of 6-foot-4, 175-pound senior forward Kyle Fischer and an experienced and balanced attack, the Vikings would cruise past a very talented Rancho Solano Prep (2-1) team on Wednesday evening in the semi-finals of their annual Hoopsgiving Pre-season Tournament – advancing to the tournament’s championship game. Rancho Solano is one of the state’s most talented teams, but they are still very young. It would show on Wednesday…

AZ Compass Prep’s National Team is very talented in their first season. After coming back from their biggest test of the season, where they faced a gifted Findlay Prep (NV) team, which resulted in a loss, the team was ready to get back to business in a local prep match-up at home with CGM Prep Academy on Tuesday evening. CGM Prep Academy is a new prep program in Arizona, that features (7) different post-graduate teams – compiling close to 100 different student-athletes in their program. Led by Greg Strickland, Derrick Ulrich and former division-I basketball coach and player Tony Miller, the program…
With the 2017-2018 high school basketball season officially getting underway on Monday, there were numerous tournaments taking place across the state on the evening. I decided to attend a charter school tournament for the time first time ever, as the annual Turkey Shootout took place on Monday with numerous teams in action. Organized by Skyline Prep HS and head coach Jace Romero and his staff, this event annually features some of the state’s top charter school programs. With numerous teams in action on the evening, I was able to catch an evening game between AZ Compass Prep’s high school team…
The 2017-2018 Arizona high school basketball season is set to get underway this week around the state with numerous Thanksgiving pre-season tournaments – setting up another exciting high school basketball season. There will be hundreds of teams and players getting underway this week, and it will be another exciting season of basketball. In the former words of past South Mountain High School head coach, now current UCLA assistant David Grace, “I know it’s going to be a good day, because I hear balls bouncing.” This season will be an exciting one again as it will be highlighted by several teams…
On day two of this year’s Duel in the Desert showcase event, the day was highlighted by two games in the evening which featured a nice match-up between Prolific Prep (CA) and Bella Vista Prep, and then another exciting match-up between Hillcrest Prep and Findlay Prep (NV). While both games would attract a lot of fans and excitement, only one of the games would deliver. Bella Vista would fall on a last second shot to undefeated Prolific, while Findlay Prep would roll against a talented Hillcrest Prep team. The Duel in the Desert event is part of the Grind Session…
