This weekend, the ACCAC JUCO Jamboree took place at Chandler-Gilbert Junior College, as each of the conference’s junior college programs took the floor – kicking off the junior college season. As a result, our Arizona Preps’ staff was able to view the conference’s top players/teams before the start to the season – my favorite event of the year each season. The Southwest Showcase Exposure Showcase took place this weekend on the campus of the Kroc Center. Organized by tournament director Ron Coleman, the event was filled with some of the state’s top young talent. Coleman is known for producing many of the state’s top events over the years, and this weekend’s event was excellent as it included many top teams from some of the top programs in the state in action just after the ACCAC JUCO Jamboree – allowing for college coaches, scouts and media to stick around and catch a glimpse of some of the state’s top talent. One of the elite 2020 prospects in the country is Higley High School’s 6-foot-8, 215-pound sophomore forward Jason Harris. Harris is coming off a huge off-season for himself, where he was selected to participate in the 2017 USA Men’s U16 National Team training camp roster, and also received a top national ranking by ESPN. After spending his freshman season at Desert Ridge High School, Harris decided to transfer schools for his sophomore season – now attending Higley High School. Hillcrest Prep Academy unveiled this year’s Hillcrest Prep national and post-graduate teams on Tuesday evening at Precision High School. Both teams would face each other in a scrimmage format, after a dunk contest kicked off the evening. The national high school team, led by the play of Arizona State commit, 6-foot-5 sophomore Kyree Walker, Nevada commit, 6-foot-10 senior KJ Hymes, 6-foot-9 junior forward Dischon Thomas and 6-foot-3 sophomore guard Jeron Artest would come back late in the game to defeat the post-grad team, 93-88. Bella Vista College Prep is a new prep school in the state of Arizona this season. A private school that has high academics and has been around for many years, this year the school will unveil a new National high school program this season, led by numerous talented prospects, which includes 7-foot-1 junior post Rick Issanza and 6-foot-7 junior wing Terry Armstrong. The state of Arizona’s overall level of basketball talent has really improved this high school season with the addition of many new prospects in the state. Through the recent additions of players in the state through the new prep schools and also high school (AIA) ranks, Arizona’s is quickly becoming a hot-bed for basketball talent. Another new addition to Arizona’s strong 2020 class of prospects is CGM Prep Academy 6-foot-5, 200-pound sophomore guard Seth Dawson. Shadow Mountain High School is absolutely loaded again this high school season, after winning the 4A state championship last season, and going undefeated throughout their regular season. After winning consecutive state titles, the Matadors are back for the 2017-2018 high school season bigger and better, as a result of some key additions to their roster for the new season.
