Anthem, Arizona – With the Arizona (AIA) high school basketball season still in preparation for the 2012-2013 season, Westwind Prep’s National High School team is already underway on their big inaugural season – a season which will include close to 60 games. After two recent comfortable wins over another newly developed local prep program, Planet Athlete, Westwind Prep continued its momentum on Saturday afternoon – facing the nation’s #7 ranked high school program, Cathedral Prep (CA).  Cathedral had been racing past its recent competition in LA, and sporting a loaded roster filled with extreme size, length and a high skill-set.  Both teams matched up…

This year’s Arizona Preps Fall Showcase was as exciting as it has ever been, as the majority of top prospects in the state all participated in this year’s 14th annual event.  Over the last decade, the state’s original showcase event has never disappointed in the ability to bring the state’s top prospects together before the start to the high school season. While there were a mere few of the state’s top prospects who chose to sit out the event, missing out on the most national and regional exposure ever for a single showcase event in the state, the majority of the…

We have spoken about the recent success at Westwind Prep Academy this week, and it looks to have just got better for the program as the post-graduate side of the program has reeled in one of the school’s biggest wins in the program’s history – defeating a talented group at Phoenix College on Tuesday evening in overtime, 91-89. The big win for Westwind Prep came on the home floor of the Bears, in front of a nice crowd and in one of the best played games that I have seen in recent memory.  Phoenix College, coached by Matt Gordon, will be…

With several guest speakers on the day speaking to the players, parents and spectators, no one provided more value to this year’s participants…

Westwind Prep has made many changes over the last year after hiring basketball guru Jeff De Laveaga to take over the struggling program.  After several years of success at the program and many prospects moving on to major colleges throughout the country, under the leadership of former Director of Basketball Operations Gary Trousdale, the school decided to go into a different direction in 2011, as Trousdale left the program.  After a year spent under the direction of Kenny Carrillo, the school’s basketball program was left without leadership once again, after Carrillo decided to part ways with the program. In the spring of 2012,…

After an amazing event that was absolutely loaded with the much of Arizona’s best basketball talent, one player that stood out on the girl’s side of things at this year’s 14th Annual Arizona Preps Fall Showcase was Valley Vista High School’s 5-foot-7, 130-pound senior point-guard and uncommitted prospect Lacey Viselli. Among some stiff competition, Viselli, still uncommitted as a senior, returned to this year’s event after being selected for the all-star game last year and raised her level of play in this year’s event.  Viselli’s ability to handle the basketball and distribute the ball to the open teammate on the floor, as well as defend the basketball with intensity and knock…

After an amazing event that was absolutely loaded with the majority of Arizona’s best basketball talent, no player stood out more on the boy’s side of things at this year’s 14th Annual Arizona Preps Fall Showcase than Dobson High School’s 6-foot-5 senior combo-guard prospect Jaron Hopkins (University of Colorado commit). Among some stiff competition, Hopkins raised his level of play enough to lead his team in the event to two big wins and one narrow defeat in the competition.  More important than wins and losses, Hopkins’ ability to play the game was terrific as he handled the basketball in traffic…

Westwind Prep Academy now 6-foot-8 junior forward prospect Zylan Cheatham won this year’s coveted 14th Annual Arizona Preps Fall Showcase Slam-Dunk Competition, and electrified the crowd in attendance with his ability to soar far above the rim and complete jaw-dropping dunks. After falling in the competition last year (2011), a much taller and much more physically developed Cheatham returned this year to take the competition by storm.  Cheatham would defeat 2014 Fall Showcase Tournament MVP Jaron Hopkins of Dobson HS (Univ. of Colorado commit), Kyndahl Holmes of Chandler HS and Sherron Wilson of Clark HS (NV) in the competition’s semi-finals and finals.   Cheatham…
