The Southwest Showcase Middle School Discovery Camp took place this Saturday afternoon in Chandler, Arizona. Organized and directed by tournament organizers Ron Coleman and Chad Groth, this event included some of the state’s top prospects from middle school and younger – including prospects from 5th through 8th grades. The event was filled with instruction and camp games and included lunch for the participants. The Arizona Preps’ staff was in attendance for this year’s event. South Mountain Junior College (12-9, 8-5) is one of the hottest teams in the ACCAC Conference – winners of their last (3) games on the season. The team has had consistent and strong play this season from several players, but much of the reason for the team’s resurgence has been the play of 6-foot-4, 195-pound freshman wing Terrence Johnson. Arizona’s 2018 class of prospects got much better this off-season when 6-foot-7 sophomore forward Dischon Thomas moved to the state of Arizona from North Carolina. Thomas immediately became one of the top prospects in the class as a result, and has proven himself this high school season after transferring into Cesar Chavez High School. Thomas comes from great basketball bloodlines, as his father Howard Thomas is a former top-rated basketball player and also a coach and student of the game. While Tohono O’odham Community College (5-14, 2-9) has struggled this season in the ACCAC to win ball games, 6-foot-4 sophomore guard Devin White has flourished in helping his team compete each night. The hard-working sophomore guard is a bright spot for head coach Matt Vargas – ranking among the scoring leaders in the ACCAC Conference. One prospect in the state that has many basketball enthusiasts excited is Desert Vista High School’s talented 6-foot-6, 210-pound freshman forward Walter Talley. Talley recently moved to the state of Arizona from New York, and now has many people in the state enthused about his promising future ahead. It was the biggest game of the year in the Charter School League in the state, as the two top teams in the state faced off at Tri-City Christian Academy in Chandler, Arizona. In front of a standing room only home crowd, Tri-City Christian would look to stay undefeated on the season, and defeat an undefeated visiting Skyline Prep Academy team for bragging rights.
