Facing host #8 seed Chaparral HS (16-12), the Thunder would overcome an early charge by the Firebirds to win the game, 66-54. Chaparral, led by new head coach and former Pepperdine University assistant coach Damin Lopez, would not have been in this position had they had the services of star 6-foot-8 junior forward/center Joe Boyd all season. Top-ranked Chandler High School’s girls program ranks among the best in the country, and Tuesday evening they improved their record on the season to an impressive 22-4. The victory was a route – a 65-21 blowout victory over Cienega HS in this year’s first round of their Division-I sectional tournament (Section II). On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, the sectional basketball tournaments to determine this year’s Arizona state playoffs will take place on the boys side in every division. Since this is the first time the playoffs will be held in such a format, it will be exciting to see this year’s sectionals unfold.
