South Mountain High School (23-5) has had a terrific season, led by a very strong coaching staff and a talented group of young prospects. On Friday evening, #1 seed Millennium High School for 5A faced off against #9 seed McClintock HS on the campus of Millennium. Both teams have had strong seasons, but Millennium has been playing at a very high level late in the season, and are looking to make a run back to the state championship game. To start the playoff game, it was a back-and-forth fast-paced game for both teams. Millennium jumped out to an 11-8 lead early with 4:30 to go in the first quarter. On Wednesday evening, the 6A State Playoffs began around the state with many exciting first-round match-ups taking place. No first-round match-up was more exciting than a meeting between two of the state’s top 6A programs, #12 seed Perry High School and #5 seed Brophy Prep. Both these two programs were teams that I had predicted before the season would go deep into the 6A State Playoffs, but both programs have seen their struggles this high school season – making for a very exciting playoff contest on Wednesday evening. Cochise Junior College 6-foot-7 sophomore forward Naje Smith has been selected as the ACCAC’s Division-I Player of the Week, after the Spokane, Washington native received the honor for the third time this junior college season. Smith averaged 23.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in two Cochise wins last week. Pima Junior College 6-foot-5 sophomore guard Rashad Smith (Grand Canyon University signee) receives the Division-II honor, after Pima JC picked up a pair of wins last week. Scottsdale Junior College 6-foot-5 sophomore wing Xavier Fuller has been selected as the Division-II Player of the Week for the sixth time this season, after averaging 24 points and 9 rebounds during the week of Febuary 3rd through the 9th. During the week, Scottsdale JC defeated Phoenix, but lost to Pima. Fuller was impressive in both contests – shooting 51% from the field. The Division-I winner of the Player of the Week award went to Central Arizona’s 6-foot-2 freshman guard Brenton Woods. It was a showdown between two of the top unsigned prospects in Arizona’s senior class, as Buckeye High School’s skilled 6-foot-1 senior point guard Tay Boothman (pictured) faced off against Shadow Mountain’s talented 6-foot-4 senior guard Shemar Morrow in the first round of the 4A State Playoffs. Shadow Mountain High School (16-8) is beginning their quest for another state championship, their fifth in a row. In the state’s 4A Division, this season the Matadors have had a much tougher road this season, than in year’s past when they absolutely blew out their competition in the division. For the first time in its 19-year history, the Jordan Brand Classic (JBC) will host elite male and female high school senior basketball players in the city where Michael Jordan rose to legend status.
