Arizona Preps basketball scout and writer Derek James recently caught Sunnyslope High School, one of the best basketball teams and programs in the West, in action against Ironwood High School on Friday.
Sunnyslope (19-4) would win the contest 60-47, as the season is now winding down and the Vikings are preparing for a second consecutive 5A State Championship run. The Vikings are loaded with numerous unsigned senior prospects for college coaches to take a hard look at this spring.
Here are two performers that caught James' attention in the game ...
Alan Abayev 6-1 SR PG Sunnyslope HS - 2018 Class (pictured)
A strong lefty guard that can control the game. He has very good poise with a strong handle of the basketball, and picks his spots wisely on the court. A good passer of the ball that has nice size and hits the open shot. Personally, I am a big fan of this kid. He knows how to win and that’s something you can’t teach. Defensively, he has enough athleticism to keep up with his man. It’s not his overall strength, but he can hold his own. He is a solid NAIA player. Has a very good basketball IQ and does not turn the ball over.
Kyle Fischer 6-4 SR SF Sunnyslope HS - 2018 Class
Kyle Fischer is a player that should play Division-I basketball, as he is a division-I talent for sure. He’s already physically built and very strong. He is a great passer, a very good shooter and good ball handler that controls the basketball. He’s just a pure basketball player. He has really good basketball IQ, and can play the 1 through 4 positions on the floor at 6-5. The best thing about him is that he’s a great team player. He’s not a ball stopper and swings the ball. He utilizes his teammates well and gets them involved. A nice recruiting target for the spring.
