Nationally Ranked Guard Elects to Stay Home, Reclassifies to 2027 and Becomes Major Addition for New ASU Head Coach Randy Bennett

One of the nation’s premier young basketball prospects has decided to stay home. In a tremendous recruiting victory for Arizona State University and new Head Basketball coach Randy Bennett, AZ Compass Prep’s nationally ranked standout guard Jakyi “Kyi Kyi” Miles announced his commitment to the Sun Devils on Monday, October 26th, providing the program with one of its most significant local recruiting achievements in recent memory. Miles, a talented 6-foot-4 guard who previously starred at Mesa High School before transferring to national basketball powerhouse AZ Compass Prep in Chandler, also announced his decision to reclassify from the Class of 2028 into the Class of 2027. The decision will allow Miles to graduate a year early and join Arizona State for the 2027–28 college basketball season.

Originally ranked as the No. 19 overall prospect nationally in ESPN’s Class of 2028 rankings, Miles has established himself among the country’s most highly regarded young guards. His decision to remain in Arizona represents an enormous recruiting victory for Bennett, who is working to establish a new era of basketball success in Tempe. For Arizona State, landing Miles represents much more than another highly regarded recruit. It is a statement about the direction of the Sun Devils' basketball program, the recruiting ability of its new coaching staff and the tremendous quality of basketball talent currently being developed throughout Arizona. Perhaps most importantly, it demonstrates that Arizona State can successfully compete with nationally prominent college basketball programs to keep the state’s premier prospects at home.

Miles announced his commitment during a press conference at AZ Compass Prep, surrounded by family and supporters. The announcement immediately generated considerable excitement throughout Arizona’s basketball community. Miles becomes Arizona State’s highest-ranked local basketball commitment since former Sun Devils standout Jahii Carson.

For Bennett, who returned to his Arizona roots after an outstanding 25-year coaching career at Saint Mary’s College, the commitment represents a major accomplishment, as he looks to establish Arizona State as a consistent contender in the highly competitive Big 12 Conference.

When Arizona State hired Randy Bennett in March 2026, the university made a significant investment in the future of its men’s basketball program. Bennett arrived in Tempe after establishing Saint Mary’s College as one of the country’s most consistent and respected mid-major basketball programs. During his tenure with the Gaels, Bennett developed an outstanding reputation for recruiting, player development, disciplined team basketball and developing talented guards, capable of competing at the highest levels of college basketball. His arrival at Arizona State provided the Sun Devils with an opportunity to establish a new identity, while strengthening recruiting relationships throughout Arizona and across the country. The commitment of Miles represents an important early achievement in those efforts.

A native of Mesa, Arizona, Bennett understands the basketball culture throughout the East Valley and recognizes the importance of keeping Arizona’s premier players within the state. That connection appears to have played an important role in Miles’ recruitment. Despite receiving considerable attention from numerous nationally respected programs, including Kansas, Texas Tech, Baylor, Texas, Stanford and several other major Division-I institutions, Miles ultimately selected Arizona State.

His decision was influenced by the consistency of Bennett’s recruiting efforts, the relationship he developed with the coaching staff and the opportunity to compete close to home. Miles told Arizona Preps that Arizona State’s location, the coaching staff’s consistent communication and their confidence in his abilities were important factors in his decision. Miles also explained that his family would have the opportunity to watch him compete at the collegiate level. Those considerations ultimately proved significant.

For Bennett and his staff, convincing an elite prospect to remain home rather than attend an established national basketball power represents a meaningful achievement. It also sends an important message to future Arizona high school basketball prospects. Arizona State intends to compete aggressively for the best players in its own backyard.

Long before announcing his commitment to Arizona State, Kyi Kyi Miles had already established himself as one of the most exciting young basketball prospects to emerge from Arizona in recent years. His remarkable development began at Mesa High School, where the talented guard quickly became one of the most productive and heavily recruited players in the country. Competing for the Mesa Jackrabbits, Miles demonstrated an advanced offensive skill set, tremendous scoring instincts and the ability to take over basketball games despite competing against older, more experienced players.

As a freshman during the 2024–25 season, Miles earned recognition as the MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year, an extraordinary achievement that immediately placed him among the nation’s most prominent young prospects. His impressive freshman campaign helped lead Mesa to the Class 6A State Championship game. Miles continued his exceptional development during his sophomore season. During his sophomore campaign, he averaged an impressive 26.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5 assists and 2 steals per game, leading Mesa to 22 victories. Those tremendous statistics illustrated his ability to impact basketball games in numerous ways. Miles demonstrated the ability to score from all three levels, create offense off the dribble, finish effectively around the basket and make difficult shots against defensive pressure. His court vision and developing playmaking abilities also made him an increasingly complete offensive prospect. Perhaps most impressive was his confidence. Miles consistently demonstrated the willingness to take important shots, create scoring opportunities in difficult situations and carry significant offensive responsibilities. His performances attracted extensive attention from national basketball scouts and media and high-major college basketball programs. By the conclusion of his sophomore season, Miles had established himself among the country’s premier prospects in the Class of 2028.

His remarkable accomplishments also helped reinforce Mesa High School’s longstanding tradition of producing outstanding basketball talent.

Following two outstanding seasons at Mesa High School, Miles elected to transfer to AZ Compass Prep for the 2026–27 season. The move provided the nationally ranked guard with an opportunity to compete against many of the country’s premier high school basketball prospects, while preparing for the demands of major college basketball. AZ Compass Prep has established itself among America’s most respected prep basketball programs, consistently attracting nationally ranked prospects and preparing them for opportunities at major Division-I institutions.

Under the leadership of Program Director and Head Coach Pete Kaffey, the Dragons have developed a strong reputation for competing at the highest levels of national high school basketball. Their demanding national schedule provides players with opportunities to compete against elite competition, while gaining exposure to college coaches and professional basketball evaluators. For Miles, the opportunity to compete at AZ Compass Prep represented another important step in his development. The transition from traditional high school basketball to a nationally competitive prep program should provide the talented guard with valuable experience against bigger, stronger and more physically developed opponents. It also offers an opportunity to continue improving his ability to operate within a team featuring numerous highly regarded prospects.

Miles’ commitment to Arizona State adds another significant recruiting accomplishment to an already remarkable period for AZ Compass Prep. During the same six-day stretch, the Dragons also celebrated commitments from five-star forward DeMarcus Henry to North Carolina and nationally ranked forward Zion Green to Alabama. Those three commitments represent another extraordinary achievement for the Chandler-based basketball powerhouse.

For Miles, however, his decision carries a particularly meaningful distinction. Unlike many elite prospects who leave Arizona to pursue their college basketball careers, Miles will remain in his home state. His journey from Mesa High School to AZ Compass Prep and ultimately Arizona State illustrates the tremendous opportunities available to elite basketball prospects throughout the Valley.

One of the most significant developments surrounding Miles’ commitment was his announcement that he would reclassify into the Class of 2027. Originally considered one of the nation’s premier prospects in the Class of 2028, Miles will now accelerate his academic timeline and graduate from high school a year earlier than originally anticipated. The decision will allow him to join Arizona State for the 2027–28 season.

Reclassification has become increasingly common among nationally recruited basketball prospects seeking to advance their collegiate careers. For Miles, the decision reflects his confidence in his ability to compete against older players, and his readiness to begin preparing for the challenges of major college basketball.

Miles indicated that he believes he is ready for college basketball while acknowledging the importance of continuing to develop his physical strength. That understanding will be important as he prepares to compete in the Big 12 Conference, widely regarded as one of the country’s strongest college basketball leagues. While Miles has demonstrated exceptional offensive abilities throughout his high school career, the transition to college basketball will require continued development in several areas. Improving his physical strength, defensive consistency, decision-making and ability to operate efficiently against elite defenders will be important factors in his continued development as a player. Nevertheless, his combination of offensive creativity, confidence, scoring instincts and natural basketball ability gives him tremendous potential.

His original ESPN ranking of No. 19 nationally in the Class of 2028 further demonstrates how highly he was regarded before his decision to reclassify. His national ranking will be evaluated within the Class of 2027 as recruiting services and national scouts and media update their player rankings. Regardless of those adjustments, Miles remains one of Arizona’s premier prospects and an important addition to Arizona State’s recruiting class.

What makes Kyi Kyi Miles such an intriguing prospect is his exceptional offensive ability. A highly skilled combo guard, Miles possesses an impressive combination of ball-handling ability, offensive creativity, perimeter shooting and natural scoring instincts. He is particularly dangerous with the basketball in his hands. Miles has demonstrated an ability to create separation from defenders, change speeds effectively, attack driving lanes and score against a variety of defensive coverages. His excellent offensive instincts allow him to recognize scoring opportunities and take advantage of defensive mismatches. He is also capable of operating both on and off the basketball. That versatility should become increasingly important as he continues his development.

At Arizona State, Miles will have an opportunity to learn from Bennett, whose Saint Mary’s teams consistently featured disciplined and productive guards. The challenge for Miles will involve combining his tremendous individual offensive abilities with the structure and execution demanded at the collegiate level. His natural scoring mentality should provide Arizona State with an exciting offensive prospect. His ability to create offense late in possessions, attack defenders off the dribble and generate scoring opportunities could eventually make him an important weapon for the Sun Devils.

Defensively, his positional size, length and mobility provide a foundation for continued development. As he becomes stronger and gains experience competing against high-level national opposition, his overall impact could continue to increase. Miles possesses the talent to develop into a high-level college basketball player.

For Bennett and his coaching staff, the opportunity to work with such an accomplished young prospect represents an exciting addition to the program’s future. Miles becomes the third highly regarded prospect to commit to Arizona State’s 2027 recruiting class under Bennett. He joins talented forward Howard Williams, a nationally recruited prospect from Dynamic Prep, and Carson Crawford, another highly regarded forward from Fleming Island High School in Florida. Both prospects entered the recruiting process with strong national reputations and significant Division-I interest.

The addition of Miles gives Arizona State another important building block as Bennett works to establish a foundation for sustained success.

The three commitments provide an encouraging early indication of the recruiting direction of the Sun Devils basketball program. For a program looking to improve its standing within the Big 12 Conference, attracting nationally ranked prospects will be essential. The commitment from Miles is particularly encouraging because of his local connection. Arizona State has historically experienced challenges retaining many of the state’s most highly regarded high school prospects. Elite players from Arizona have frequently elected to attend major programs throughout the country.

Bennett’s ability to secure a commitment from one of the state’s most talented prospects represents a potential turning point in those efforts. It demonstrates that the Sun Devils can provide an attractive opportunity for high-level local talent seeking to compete in a major conference without leaving Arizona. Should Bennett and his staff continue to establish strong relationships with the state’s leading high school and prep basketball programs, Arizona State could benefit considerably from Arizona’s rapidly expanding basketball talent base.

Perhaps the most meaningful aspect of Miles’ commitment is what it represents for the future of Arizona basketball. For decades, Arizona has continued to develop into one of the country’s most respected basketball recruiting markets. The state’s traditional high school programs, nationally competitive prep schools, grassroots basketball organizations and player development programs have collectively helped elevate the level of basketball talent throughout the region. Programs such as AZ Compass Prep have played an important role in that transformation. Their success has helped attract significant national recruiting attention while providing opportunities for elite prospects to compete against the country’s best players.

The commitment of Miles represents another important development in that continuing evolution.

An Arizona-raised prospect developed his basketball abilities at Mesa High School, became nationally recognized, transferred to one of the country’s premier prep basketball programs and ultimately elected to continue his collegiate career at Arizona State. That progression is particularly encouraging for the state’s basketball community. It demonstrates the ability of Arizona’s basketball infrastructure to develop nationally competitive prospects while providing opportunities for those players to remain close to home.

Arizona State’s ability to successfully recruit Miles also provides additional encouragement for local high school coaches and grassroots basketball programs. The Sun Devils have an opportunity to establish stronger relationships with the state’s basketball community, and demonstrate that Arizona’s premier prospects can remain home while pursuing their basketball ambitions.

The return of Bennett, himself a product of Mesa’s basketball community, makes the story even more compelling. From Westwood High School and Mesa Community College to his successful coaching career at Saint Mary’s, Bennett has maintained deep connections to Arizona basketball. Now he has convinced one of Mesa’s brightest young basketball stars to become an important part of his future at Arizona State. It is a remarkable homecoming story for both the coach and the player.

While his college destination has now been determined, Miles still has an important senior season ahead of him at AZ Compass Prep. The Dragons are preparing for another demanding national schedule during the 2026–27 season, with expectations of competing against many of America’s strongest prep basketball programs. Miles figures to be an important contributor to the program’s success. His scoring ability, offensive creativity and playmaking skills should provide AZ Compass Prep with another dynamic offensive weapon. Competing alongside numerous nationally recruited prospects will also provide him with valuable experience as he prepares for college basketball. With his recruitment concluded, Miles can now concentrate on continuing his development, helping his team compete for a national championship and preparing himself for the transition to Arizona State.

The expectations surrounding his future will undoubtedly be considerable. A nationally ranked guard with tremendous offensive ability, Miles has already demonstrated the talent necessary to compete against outstanding competition. Now he will look to take the next step in his development.

For Randy Bennett and Arizona State, the commitment represents an important recruiting victory and another reason for optimism surrounding the future of Sun Devils basketball. For AZ Compass Prep, it represents another nationally recognized prospect advancing to a high major Division-I program. For Mesa High School, it provides another example of the tremendous basketball talent developed within its longstanding program. And for Arizona basketball, Miles’ commitment represents something especially meaningful, as one of the state’s premier basketball prospects is staying home.
