The University of Alabama has landed one of the nation’s premier basketball prospects, as AZ Compass Prep’s 6-foot-9 senior forward Zion Green announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide on Saturday, October 31st, providing Head Coach Nate Oats with another significant recruiting victory. Green, a highly regarded five-star prospect ranked No. 16 nationally by ESPN in the Class of 2027, selected Alabama over an impressive group of finalists that included Kansas, Oklahoma and Ole Miss. The talented forward is also ranked as the No. 2 power forward nationally by ESPN, establishing himself among the country’s most coveted prospects.
For Alabama, Green’s commitment represents another major addition to a rapidly developing 2027 recruiting class. For AZ Compass Prep, the announcement provides another example of the Chandler-based program’s continued success in attracting elite national basketball talent and preparing players for opportunities at the highest levels of college basketball. And for Green, the decision represents the culmination of an extensive recruiting process that saw his national reputation continue to grow throughout the spring, summer and fall.
Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Green has developed into one of the most intriguing prospects in the country because of his combination of size, length, athleticism, offensive versatility and tremendous long-term potential. Now, the talented forward will take his abilities to Tuscaloosa, where he will join an Alabama basketball program that has established itself among the nation’s elite under Oats.
Green’s recruitment attracted considerable attention from college basketball programs throughout the country. The versatile forward received scholarship offers from numerous high-major programs, including Alabama, Kansas, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Auburn, Michigan, Syracuse, Villanova, Maryland and several others. As his recruitment progressed, Green narrowed his focus to four programs: Alabama, Kansas, Oklahoma and Ole Miss. Each institution offered significant opportunities, but Alabama eventually emerged as the program best suited for Green’s basketball development and collegiate future.
A significant factor in his decision was his relationship with Alabama’s coaching staff, particularly Oats. The Crimson Tide began recruiting Green during the spring and maintained consistent communication throughout the process. Alabama’s coaching staff also demonstrated its commitment by evaluating Green extensively during his grassroots basketball season.
Green eventually made an official visit to Tuscaloosa in September, providing him an opportunity to experience Alabama’s basketball facilities, coaching philosophy and overall program environment. The visit made a considerable impression.
In discussing his decision with ESPN, Green expressed his appreciation for Alabama’s persistence throughout his recruitment. He also praised the intensity of the Crimson Tide’s practices, the program’s facilities and the accountability demanded by Oats. Perhaps most importantly, Green recognized that Alabama’s offensive philosophy would provide him with an opportunity to maximize his versatility. The combination of player development, coaching relationships and offensive freedom ultimately helped Alabama secure his commitment. For Oats, landing another nationally ranked five-star prospect represents a significant achievement as Alabama continues to recruit against the most prestigious programs in college basketball.
At 6-foot-9 and approximately 190 pounds, Green possesses an extremely intriguing physical profile. His excellent length, mobility and fluid athleticism allow him to impact basketball games in numerous ways. Although listed primarily as a forward, Green possesses the versatility to operate both inside and along the perimeter. He is capable of handling the basketball in transition, attacking opposing defenders off the dribble, finishing around the basket and knocking down perimeter jump shots. His ability to stretch the floor offensively makes him particularly valuable in today’s college basketball environment. Green’s tremendous physical tools also provide significant advantages defensively.
His length allows him to challenge perimeter shooters, disrupt passing lanes, contest shots around the basket and defend multiple positions. While his overall physical strength and consistency remain areas for development, Green’s tremendous upside makes him one of the more fascinating prospects nationally in the 2027 recruiting class. His offensive development has been especially impressive.
During the grassroots basketball season, Green competed for the As Promised program on the Puma Pro16 Circuit. According to Rivals, Green averaged 13.7 points, 9 rebounds and 1.2 blocked shots per game, while converting 49.3% of his field-goal attempts and 36.4% of his three-point attempts during the evaluation period it tracked. His performances demonstrated his ability to contribute as a scorer, rebounder and defensive presence against high-level national competition. Green subsequently elevated his recruiting profile with another impressive showing at the prestigious Border League event. According to statistics reported by ESPN, Green converted nearly 73% of his two-point attempts and 40% of his three-point attempts during the event. Those impressive shooting percentages provided further evidence of his developing offensive efficiency and versatility.
For a prospect with Green’s size and length, the ability to consistently make perimeter shots creates enormous matchup challenges. Defenders must respect his ability to shoot from the perimeter, while also accounting for his ability to attack the basket. As Green continues to develop physically and improve his overall consistency, his offensive potential becomes even more intriguing. These qualities make him an excellent fit for Alabama’s offensive system.
Since taking over Alabama’s basketball program in 2019, Nate Oats has transformed the Crimson Tide into one of the country’s most exciting and nationally respected college basketball programs. Alabama has developed a reputation for playing an aggressive, fast-paced offensive style that emphasizes transition opportunities, perimeter shooting, offensive spacing and attacking the basket. The program’s offensive philosophy has helped attract numerous highly regarded prospects who recognize the opportunity to showcase their abilities in an up-tempo system. Green appears particularly well-suited for this approach.
At 6-9, his ability to rebound the basketball and initiate transition opportunities provides the type of offensive versatility Oats values. Green can also create offensive mismatches by operating along the perimeter against traditional forwards. His shooting ability allows Alabama to maintain offensive spacing, while his length and athleticism provide additional versatility defensively.
The Crimson Tide have enjoyed considerable success developing versatile frontcourt prospects who can perform multiple responsibilities. Green’s combination of physical tools and offensive skill gives Alabama another player capable of thriving in that environment. His commitment also reinforces Alabama’s impressive national recruiting momentum.
Green becomes the program’s second commitment in the Class of 2027, joining highly regarded guard Chase Lumpkin, a 6-foot-4 prospect from McEachern High School in Georgia. Lumpkin is ranked No. 23 nationally by ESPN, giving the Crimson Tide two top-25 national prospects in the same recruiting class. According to ESPN, Green is the sixth five-star prospect to commit to Alabama since Oats became Head Coach in 2019. Those recruiting accomplishments demonstrate the remarkable national respect Alabama’s basketball program has developed in recent years. With Green and Lumpkin now committed, Alabama has established a strong foundation for its 2027 recruiting class.
Green’s decision also represents another tremendous recruiting accomplishment for AZ Compass Prep. The Chandler-based national basketball powerhouse has developed an outstanding reputation for attracting elite basketball prospects from throughout the United States and preparing them for opportunities at major Division-I programs. Green transferred to AZ Compass Prep for his senior season after previously attending Mount Zion Prep. His decision to join the Dragons placed him within one of the country’s most competitive prep basketball environments. AZ Compass Prep consistently competes against nationally recognized opponents, while assembling rosters featuring highly regarded college prospects and future professional talent. The program’s national schedule and high-level training environment provide players with opportunities to compete against many of America’s most talented high school basketball prospects.
For Green, joining AZ Compass Prep represents another important stage in his development before beginning his collegiate career at Alabama. His commitment comes during an extraordinary recruiting stretch for the Dragons. In addition to Green’s announcement, AZ Compass Prep also celebrated commitments from five-star national prospect DeMarcus Henry to the University of North Carolina and nationally regarded guard Jakyi “Kyi Kyi” Miles to Arizona State University. The three commitments occurred within a remarkable six-day period, further demonstrating the strength of AZ Compass Prep’s current roster and the program’s substantial national recruiting presence.
While each announcement represents an important individual accomplishment, collectively they demonstrate the program’s continued ability to attract players who are capable of competing at the highest levels of college basketball. Green’s commitment to Alabama is another significant example of that success.
His basketball background also includes an impressive family connection. Green is the son of former La Salle University standout Rodney Green, who enjoyed a successful collegiate career and was inducted into the Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Fame. That basketball background provides another interesting element to the younger Green’s development. His father’s experience competing at the Division-I level offers valuable perspective as Zion prepares to make the transition into major college basketball.
Green will now look to complete his senior season at AZ Compass Prep before heading to Tuscaloosa in 2027. The Dragons are preparing for another challenging national schedule during the 2026–27 season, with expectations of competing against the country’s premier prep basketball programs and pursuing another opportunity to compete for a national championship. Green figures to be an important part of those aspirations. His size, offensive versatility, athleticism and ability to impact both ends of the floor will provide AZ Compass Prep with another talented weapon throughout the season. And with his college recruitment now concluded, Green can concentrate on continuing his development and helping the Dragons achieve their team goals.
Green’s commitment represents another significant development in Arizona’s increasingly prominent national basketball landscape. Over the past several years, the state has continued to attract elite basketball prospects from throughout the country, with nationally recognized prep programs helping elevate Arizona’s reputation among college coaches and professional evaluators. AZ Compass Prep has played a significant role in that transformation. The Dragons have consistently produced high-major Division-I prospects and future professional talent, while competing against many of America’s strongest high school basketball programs. Green’s decision to attend Alabama further reinforces that national reputation.
The Crimson Tide successfully recruited one of the nation’s premier forwards from a program located in Chandler, Arizona. And with Green joining two other highly regarded AZ Compass Prep prospects who announced major college commitments during the same week, the Dragons continue to demonstrate their considerable recruiting influence.
For Alabama, the addition of Green represents another significant victory for Nate Oats and his coaching staff. For AZ Compass Prep, it provides another outstanding example of the caliber of talent competing within its basketball program. For Arizona basketball, it represents another reminder of the state’s growing importance within the national recruiting landscape.
