Terrific rising senior guard prospect Tru Washington had a tremendous showing for himself this spring and summer - becoming one of the hottest prospects in the country for the 2023 Class. After a Top 25 All-Star Game MVP performance at this summer's Pangos All-American Camp, and numerous excellent performances, Washington has seen his college recruitment continue to soar among Division-I programs. While Washington now has a nice list of college offers for himself, he made another decision on Monday to change high schools for his senior season - choosing to move to national power AZ Compass Prep.
It has been known that this might happen for Washington, who will turn 19 just before the age deadline for student-athletes in AIA programs. Washington would have been ineligible to play this season for the AIA, so the opportunity to play for an absolutely loaded group with AZ Compass Prep this senior season on a loaded national schedule was a welcome addition for Washington and his family.
Washington currently has a host of Division-I offers for himself, as he has received offers from TCU, LSU, Texas Tech, Washington State, Georgia, Portland, DePaul, Pepperdine, Arizona State, UNLV, Nevada, UC-Santa Barbara, IUPUI and Portland State.
Washington is coming off an excellent spring and summer. Washington was selected as this year's Pangos Best of Arizona League CO-MVP. Washington was the leading scorer in the league. He was also selected as the Pangos All-American Camp Top 25 All-Star Game CO-MVP.
Washington is an intriguing prospect at 6-4, as he is able to play as a combo-guard, but is at his best while scoring the basketball from the off-guard position. He has a nice shooting stroke with range on his shot, which makes him difficult to defend for opposing guards. He is at his best when putting the ball on the deck and making plays off the dribble, where he is a strong finisher at the rim, as a result of his left-handed prowess, which makes him even more difficult to defend. He has excellent body control and is a strong finisher around the basket and in the lane, or in the open floor where he thrives. He also possesses a good mid-range game, which allows him to operate between the lines at a high level.
Washington is also a strong rebounder from the guard position as well, and is able to post up smaller guards around the basket and be very effective at making plays or drawing fouls from the opposition. A left-hander, Washington is a very good ball handler and does not play around much with the basketball. Instead, he makes plays efficiently and with purpose. He is a good passer as well, and sees the floor, while also pushing the ball up the court to the open player or teammate, and then filling the break. He likes to play fast and with good intensity and aggression.
Washington is another excellent addition to an already loaded ball club that the AZ Compass Prep staff is putting together for the 2022-2023 season. They will be very fun to watch next season.
