Pima Junior College is off to an excellent start to the 2014-2015 junior college basketball season, behind the strong play of 6-foot-6 sophomore forward Ben Gershman. Recently, Gershman would make his college decision - signing with a smaller college program that is high on academics.
Gershman is a big-time student that has a desire to be an engineer in the future, so he recently signed a national letter of intent with the perfect school for his endeavors - the Colorado School of Mines.
Gershman is 24 years of age and returned to Pima JC to play basketball for Brian Peabody last season after working as a plumber and a handyman. In his first year, he had 20 double-doubles and was named Second Team All-ACCAC conference and First Team All-Region I, Division II. This season, Gershman is already off to an excellent start to the season - right back where he left off last season. For the season, Gershman is averaging 23 points and 12 rebounds per game as Pima is off to a 5-1 start.
Congrtulations to Gershman and the Pima coaching staff on this amazing accomplishment.
Arizona Hoop Review Scouting Report: Gershman is a solid combo-forward prospect that has a very good skill level and a nice-sized physical frame, which allows him to play inside and out. He is left-handed, making it difficult to defend him inside the painted area of the floor. He gets a lot done inside the paint, as a result of his left-handed prowess and does not mind physical contact. Gershman has a nice shooting stroke from mid-range, and is also capable of stepping outside to the perimeter and making shots out to 22 feet – a nice attribute. He is a crafty performer that has a knack for the basketball and always seems to be around the ball. A very good offensive rebounder and finisher inside. Good low post defender. Capable defender on the perimeter. OK athlete. Runs the floor. Had a strong freshman campaign for head coach Brian Peabody. Will have a big sophomore season. One of the better overall prospects in the conference.
