Before the season even begins, one of the top returning players in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) is already generating significant attention. South Mountain Community College standout Travis Vasquez, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound rising sophomore guard, enters the 2026-27 season as one of the conference’s premier prospects, and a player that should be on the radar of Division-I and high-level Division-II college programs across the country. After a terrific freshman season for himself last year, I expect Vasquez to raise a lot of eyebrows with his play in his sophomore season, and become one of the top overall prospects in the conference.
Vasquez enjoyed a tremendous redshirt freshman campaign, establishing himself as one of the ACCAC’s most productive guards. He averaged 12.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game, while shooting an impressive 45.9 percent from the field and 44 percent from three-point range. He is an absolute weapon offensively, and his combination of scoring efficiency, court vision and perimeter shooting made him a dominant force for South Mountain and one of the conference’s top overall performers.
Now entering his sophomore season, I expect Vasquez to be among the top individual statistical performers in the ACCAC. His continued development should draw even more attention from college coaches, as he has already proven he possesses the talent to compete at the Division-I level.
A true combo-guard prospect, Vasquez has excellent size and an offensive skillset to run the point, while also possessing the scoring ability to thrive as an off guard. He is a confident playmaker who handles the basketball with poise, creates his own offense off the dribble, and consistently creates quality scoring opportunities for his teammates. His ability to stretch the floor with his perimeter shooting makes him a difficult matchup, while his confidence and offensive versatility allow him to impact the game in a variety of ways. He is one of the toughest one-on-one covers in the conference and has all the tools necessary to enjoy a breakout sophomore season. He should finish among the conference’s leading scorers this season.
Vasquez’s success is no accident. He has developed into one of the conference’s top guards through an outstanding work ethic and a genuine love for the game of basketball. Those qualities helped him become the first member of his family to attend college, a tremendous accomplishment that speaks volumes about his determination and character. An excellent student, Vasquez was recently named the first-ever recipient of the Guardian Law Group Future Scholarship, recognizing his commitment both on and off the court. He is currently pursuing a degree in Communications while balancing the demanding responsibilities of being a student-athlete, employee and full-time college student.
I have personally been a big fan of Travis Vasquez since his standout days at Deer Valley High School, where he starred under head coach Jed Dunn and helped lead the Skyhawks to a 4A State Championship. Watching his growth both as a player and as a young man has been impressive, and few student-athletes better represent what college athletics should be about.
While Vasquez has generated significant recruiting interest in recent months, he is still awaiting his first Division-I scholarship offer. I fully expect that to change this season. His talent, maturity, work ethic and passion for the game should allow him to play at the highest level basketball will take him.
I look forward to watching Travis Vasquez put together an outstanding sophomore season at South Mountain Community College under the strong leadership of Head Coach Cory Hoff and continue elevating his recruitment. He is unquestionably one of the ACCAC’s top returning prospects and a player every college coach should be evaluating closely this season.
