One of the premier basketball prospects in the country, Sunnyslope High School's 6-foot-11, 245-pound senior Darius Wabbington, has taken another major step in his college recruiting process. The gifted post prospect from Sunnyslope High School is coming off a tremendous junior season in which he helped lead the Vikings to a 28-2 overall record, an Arizona Open Division State Championship and a #4 national ranking. Sunnyslope established itself as one of the nation’s elite high school basketball programs last season, and Wabbington’s dominant play was a major reason. Wabbington has had an excellent spring and summer performance, and now has trimmed his recruiting list to (6) schools, that he will select from this fall.
A starter since his freshman season, Wabbington continued his rise as one of America’s elite prospects by averaging 17.2 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.3 blocks per game as a junior. His ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor, combined with his size, and versatility have made him one of the most coveted recruits in the country.
Wabbington carried that momentum into the spring and summer, while competing with the heavily Adidas-sponsored Compton Magic (CA) program. Playing alongside one of the nation’s most talented travel team rosters, he has showcased even greater versatility by spending more time on the perimeter, displaying improved ball-handling, passing ability, and the versatility that makes him such a unique frontcourt prospect.
His outstanding play has elevated him to a No. 15 overall ranking in ESPN’s national rankings for the Class of 2027, while also earning five-star status from two of the nation’s three major recruiting services.
Recently, Wabbington announced that he has narrowed his college choices to six outstanding programs: Arizona, Kentucky, Indiana, North Carolina, Texas and Louisville.
He has also scheduled his first three official visits, beginning with Louisville on September 11, followed by Arizona on September 25, and Texas on October 9.
Wabbington also represented USA Basketball this summer as a member of the 2026 FIBA U18 Men’s AmeriCup team. He helped Team USA capture the silver medal while averaging 9.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.2 steals per game in five contests against international competition.
It remains unclear which of the six finalists currently holds the advantage in Wabbington’s recruitment, making his eventual college decision one of the most anticipated recruiting announcements in the country over the coming months.
Basketball runs deep in the Wabbington family. His father, Derek Wabbington, played collegiately at the University of Wyoming before enjoying a professional playing career, giving Darius a strong basketball foundation, as he continues to develop into one of the nation’s premier prospects.
