Bella Vista Prep's talented 6-foot-6 senior guard Jason Fontenet was regarded as one of the top unsigned prospects in the West for the 2023 Class. While it was unsure as to when Fontenet would make his college decision, this past weekend, Fontenet made his college decision to sign with a program in the Big West Conference, as he gave a commitment to UC-Santa Barbara and Head Coach Joe Pasternack and his coaching staff.
Fontenet gave a big commitment to UC-Santa Barbara over other offers from Georgetown, Arizona State, Washington State, Pepperdine, San Jose State, UC-Riverside, NAU and Portland State.
After leaving St. Mary's High School for Bella Vista Prep, at the end of his sophomore season, Fontenet would suffer a knee injury that would keep him out his entire junior season. Fontenet overcame the knee injury that kept him out for his junior season, and he returned to form as a senior and proved he was healthy, while also maturing and growing physically. Fontenet is now ready to make an impact in college, after a strong prep season, where he was among the top individual performers on the Grind Session.
Fontenet is a skilled combo-guard prospect that is capable of playing both guard positions and has the body and physical tools to play immediately next college season.
Congratulations to Fontenet and the Bella Vista Prep program on this amazing accomplishment, and good luck to him in the future from our Arizona Preps' staff. Fontenet is also an excellent student and will look to benefit from the academics provided at UC-Santa Barbara.
Arizona Hoop Review Scouting Report: Fontenet is among the elite prospects in Arizona's 2023 Class. A bigger guard prospect, Fontenet is a sure-fire future combo-guard prospect, but likes to have the basketball in his hands from the point guard position. He is a play-maker that sees the floor and enjoys getting the basketball to the open man on the floor and also cutters to the basket. He is also able to make plays for himself off the dribble, or create scoring opportunities for his teammates, while penetrating in the lane or around defenders. He pushes the basketball up the floor consistently, and is also a very good scorer of the basketball, when he decides to make plays for himself. He already possesses an excellent frame on his college ready body. He has a good mid-range game, and is able to score effectively within the lane and tight spaces on the floor. Has grown a great deal physically and now stands 6-6 in height, which will benefit him a great deal over time as he advances in his basketball career. A nice looking prospect that is an excellent student as well.
