Since arriving to the state of Arizona this fall and landing at AZ Compass Prep, 7-foot-2 senior post Chol Marial has not seen any action on the basketball court. In fact, he has not played any organized basketball for some time. After recovering from several nagging injuries to his legs, Marial has now recently been cleared to return to action and will look to pick up his play in January for AZ Compass Prep - a nice shot in the arm for the program, which has gone through a coaching change over the last month.
Marial, the nation's former #1 ranked national prospect for the 2019 Class and a definite future NBA draft pick, quickly emerged on the national basketball scene as a mere dominant 8th grader. Marial has been one of the nation's premier prospects for some time, but he has had nagging injuries over the past couple years, causing him to miss a lot of action on the basketball court. A native of Sudan, Chol spent last season at IMG Academy in Florida, after spending two seasons at Chesire Academy in Connecticut.
Chol will return to action in January and will hope to lead the Compass Prep program to a strong winter/spring performance against top-rated competition. Marial will look to lead a talented group that also features elite 6-foot-9 freshman wing prospect Sadraque Nganga, who is among the nation's elite prospects in the 2022 Class.
Chol has been recruited by every top college program in the country, at one time, and recently received an offer from Arizona State University and Head Coach Bob Hurley. Marial also has offers from West Virginia, Florida State, Georgetown, St. John's, Wake Forest, Iowa, SMU, Rutgers, Portland and Central Florida.
Marial does not currently list any leaders in his current college recruitment, but he has indicated that he plans to attend college next fall, and recently took the NCAA college entrance examination.
I will be keeping a very close eye on the return to action of Marial, and look forward to seeing him in action very soon. It should be a very big spring for Chol, as he returns to action and form, and many high-major division-I programs look to position themselves to land the lengthy and athletic post talent.
Arizona Hoop Review Scouting Report: Marial is an ultra long and lengthy post prospect with superior length of body and a strong motor physically. He has NBA size and length already and an advanced offensive skillset that allows him to score inside and out. Marial is a futuristic post player that has a soft touch on his perimeter shooting stroke with unlimited range, and is able to score effectively around the basket with a variety of jump hooks and dunks - strong finishes at the rim over defenders. He has very good footwork and runs the floor very well like that of a smaller post player. He has nice lift off the ground and is able to finish very high above the rim. A very good passer that sees the floor and is very unselfish. Handles the basketball for his extreme size and length. An active rebounder that is able to rebound outside of his area on the floor. An excellent shotblocker with excellent timing and activity around the basket. A game changer on the defensive end of the basketball court, and able to completely change a game with his command presence on the floor. Has an amazing future ahead of him if he can remain healthy. A definite future NBA talent.
