One of the top returning junior college prospects in the country will once again suit up for Glendale Community College this season, as 6-foot-6 sophomore Stephan Miller has elected to return to the Gauchos after a dominant freshman campaign that established him as one of the premier players in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC). Miller led the conference in scoring as a mere freshman last season, and had a big decision to make at the end of the season. While receiving his share of college recruitment during the season, Miller has chosen to come back for his sophomore season and lead the Gauchos once again, but this time, in an attempt to improve his overall college recruitment and raise his recruiting stock a great deal, which will be well deserved.
Miller was sensational as a freshman, leading the ACCAC in scoring, while averaging 19.0 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game, while shooting an impressive 53.1 percent from the field. His outstanding production earned him First Team All-ACCAC honors and quickly placed him among the elite junior college prospects in the West. Rather than making the jump to a four-year program after receiving significant recruiting attention, Miller made the decision to return to Glendale Community College for another season - a move that immediately makes the Gauchos one of the teams to watch in the conference.
A product of Liberty High School, Miller was already well known throughout Arizona after helping lead the Lions to a 6A State Championship during his senior season. He has continued that winning tradition at Glendale, where he played a major role in the Gauchos’ success last season.
Miller is a difficult matchup for opposing defenses because of his combination of size, strength and versatility. At 6-foot-6 with a powerful frame, he is capable of scoring both in the post and from the mid-range, while also stepping out on the perimeter when needed. His physical style of play allows him to consistently create favorable mismatches, making him one of the toughest covers in the ACCAC. Miller was a huge reason for Glendale’s success last season and he will again be expected to lead one of the conference’s featured NJCAA Division-II programs. Under the guidance of Head Coach Ken Carrillo, whose fast-paced offensive system has allowed Miller’s game to flourish, Glendale will look to challenge perennial conference power Pima Community College, which has dominated the ACCAC over the past three seasons.
Although it remains unclear which college programs have formally offered Miller at this stage of his recruitment, it is difficult to imagine that many schools across the country are not already monitoring his progress. His remarkable freshman production, combined with his size, versatility and continued development, should generate significant Division-I recruiting attention throughout his sophomore campaign.
Miller enters the season as one of the most highly regarded returning JUCO prospects in the country, and is another outstanding example of how junior college basketball continues to provide a tremendous platform for under-the-radar talent to develop into Division-I prospects. Through hard work, dedication and consistent production, he has established himself among the top junior college players in both the West and nationally.
