This week I attended a junior college contest between the Phoenix College and Tohono O’ Odham men’s basketball programs – on the campus of Phoenix College. It was a hard fought game to the last minute of the contest, with Tohono O’ Odham pulling out the win by the score of 71 to 65. I really look forward to seeing both these teams compete this year in the ACCAC. Here are my evaluations of players on both teams . . . Phoenix College Player Evaluations Avonte Nelms 6’5 200 Lbs. Since the 2016-2017 Arizona high school basketball season has now kicked off, I would like to highlight some of the best players in the state not everyone may know about. After attending the Aspire Prep Fall Classic recently, a couple of new faces really stood out to me. One of those faces was that of Chicago native, 5-foot-10, 160-pound PG Milton Wordlow III. A tough, gritty type of player that you can get behind, Wordlow has very similar scoring tendencies to that of NBA guard Shabazz Napier. He was able to get shots off on any defender that was in…
Aspire Basketball Academy Fall Classic Evaluations/ Notes (Part 1) On November 18-19 2016, I was able to attend Aspire Basketball Academy’s 1st Fall Classic. It was a great event from start to finish with many of the top prep players on the West Coast in attendance. I would like to thank National Team Coach Jeremy Kipness, Post Graduate Coach Derek Olich and the rest of the Aspire Basketball Academy Staff for their hospitality this weekend and I really look forward to seeing them, as well as their teams this upcoming season. Of the games I personally watched, here are some…
ArizonaVarsity attended Anthony Ray’s 18th annual Arizona Preps showcase. The event was held this weekend at Sagu University in Phoenix (Ariz.). 60 players showed up and tried to show the scouts on hand their skills. There were some teams/players that came from out of town and it was an entertaining setting. A couple of the games were more competitive than others, but overall their were some nice players in attendance. Here were 16 players who stood out at the event. 2017 6-foot PG/CG Virshon Cotton (Hillcrest) -Cotton is a deep shooter who gets great lift. He sees the court well…
On October 13th on the campus of Phoenix College, Hillcrest Prep Academy’s post graduate and national teams played two games separately. The 2nd game of the night was Hillcrest’s Post Graduate team vs. Eleate Prep out of Riverside, California. It was a great night of basketball, and good to get a glimpse of each of these teams before the 2016-2017 basketball season starts here in just a few shorts weeks. Of the games I personally saw, here are my notes/ observations of the top players: Hillcrest (Post Graduate) Prep Evaluations 2017 6-foot-5, 190-pounds Jay Green has a college ready frame…
On October 13th on the campus of Phoenix College, Hillcrest Prep Academy’s post graduate and national teams played two games separately. The 1st game of the night was Hillcrest’s National Team, featuring the #1 player in the country, DeAndre Ayton (University of Arizona commit) vs. Phoenix College. It was a great night of basketball, and good to get a glimpse of each of these teams before the 2016-2017 basketball season starts here in just a few shorts weeks. Of the games I personally saw, here are my notes/ observations of the top players: Hillcrest (National) Prep Evaluations 2019 6-foot-5, 175-pounds…
On Sunday, October 9th 2016, Ron Coleman hosted his Discovery Camp on the campus of Phoenix College. This event served as a coming-out party for some of the top young talent in the state (7th grade – freshman), and it was great to get an early look at the next wave of Arizona’s youth before the high school season begins here in just a few short weeks. Thanks again to Ron Coleman for putting on such a great event, and I really look forward to tracking a majority of these future Arizona high school basketball prospects. Of the games I…
One of the best available prospects in Arizona’s 2017 class took an official visit recently, and has one coming up this weekend as well. Apollo High School’s 5-foot-11, 175-pound CG Dre Marin took an official recruiting visit to Idaho State University on September 24th through the 25th, a visit that went very well for him. Marin is now on another recruiting visit this weekend to Southern Utah. Marin should decide between these two schools, so a commitment should be coming soon for him. Marin is above and away one of the best scorers of the basketball in the state, and…
As the 2016-2017 high school basketball approaches in Arizona quickly, we here at Arizona Preps would like to highlight some of the better players in the state for 2017 who have not committed to a school, as of yet. One of those players would be 6-foot-5, 185-pound senior SF Caleb Simmons of Desert (Phoenix) Vista HS. Simmons, who once was highly sought after by numerous college programs, saw his college recruitment tail off this club season. Simmons played his club basketball this summer with Under Armour -sponsored Splash City (CA) out of Northern California. He has been one of top…
