South Mountain Junior College is really trying to put together something special for next season.  After landing PAC-12 transfer, 6-foot-9 post Connor MacDougall from Arizona State this spring, this team is bringing back several top-rated prospects, and has also added numerous other prospects to round out a very nice class of top performers for the 2015-2016 season. This week, the SMCC coaching staff got another boost when they landed Tucson’s Cienega High School 2015 graduate, 6-foot-3, 190-pound wing Terrence Johnson, after Johnson signed a national letter of intent with the junior college basketball program.  Johnson is one of the state’s elite football…

One of the top overall sleeper prospects in Arizona’s 2016 class is no longer a sleeper, after a giving a surprising verbal comitment this weekend.   Moon Valley High School’s athletically gifted 6-foot-6 senior forward Bryce Cheney had a strong showing for himelf this summer.   After soaring well below the recruiting radar through much of the spring and summer, Cheney put it all together in Las Vegas during the final NCAA evaluation period event.  As a result, Cheney received some serious division-I interest for himself and several scholarship offers, as a result. While it had been reported that Cheney had received a division-I offer from UTEP just…

Let’s take a look at some of the lesser known prospects in the state that emerged this club season.  These prospects had good performances on the club circuit with their respective teams, and are prospects that I believe made a strong case with college programs to begin to recruit them. One of these prospects is Shadow Mountain High School’s 6-foot-7, 235-pound rising senior post Isaiah Jones.  A native of Austin, Texas, before he moved to the state of Arizona just a year ago, Jones is a wide-body post prospect with excellent size and girth to his large frame.  Jones’ performance…

One of the top overall sleeper prospects in Arizona’s 2016 class is Moon Valley High School’s athletically gifted 6-foot-6 senior forward Bryce Cheney.  After soaring well below the recruiting radar through much of the spring and summer, Cheney put it all together in Las Vegas last week – saving his best performance for the last NCAA evaluation period.  As a result, Cheney has now received a big division-I scholarship offer for himself. On Wednesday, Cheney received a division-I offer from UTEP, as a result of his strong performance while playing for the Arizona Power Black in the Bigfoot Hoops tournament. …

Horizon High School’s 6-foot-4 rising senior post Katie Grant is one of the top overall prospects in Arizona’s 2016 class.  Very few post players in the state of Arizona or in the West, for that matter, have the size and potential of Grant. Grant is currently finishing up a strong summer for herself, while playing for her club program, the Arizona Select.  The team traveled to the USJN Nike Championships and advanced to the championship game of the tournament, before losing in the tournament final.  Other top-rated girls prospects on the team included Lauryn Satterewhite, Kaitlyn Bickle and Taylor Chavez.…

Sunday concluded the week’s action in Las Vegas, as the majority of Arizona teams had headed home already.  Some Arizona teams, however, were still in action – resulting in some top performances on the day. After two big wins on Saturday, the Arizona Magic Elite 17U team would advance to the quarterfinals on Sunday.  While playing an 8AM game, the team would lead late in the game by 11 points, but would turn the basketball over in the late stages of the game – resulting in a narrow defeat . . . The top individual performer again on Sunday was…

Day three of Las Vegas is much different than day one and two, as many teams have already began checking out of hotels and heading back home.  On Saturday, if you lose, you are out of any one of the “Big 3” exposure events in Vegas.  So the competition and the level of intensity were fierce in each of the events on Saturday. The big game for Arizona basketball enthusiasts on Saturday, featured a game that we should have been able to watch back in Arizona, between the Arizona Power Black and the Arizona Warriors.  But since the Arizona Warriors club…

Day two of action in Las Vegas was exciting once again with each of Arizona’s top club teams in action.  Our staff was back at it again – running around all day from gym to gym to catch as much action as possible.  After catching many games on the day and witnessing some strong performances, the day was dampened by a severe knee injury suffered by Gilbert Christian High School’s talented 6-foot-4 senior guard Cameron Satterwhite (University of Colorado commit). The injury came in his team’s exciting match-up with the heavily Nike-sponsored Houston Hoops (TX) team.  While facing Houston Hoops on the main floor of…

The city of Las Vegas is jam packed with basketball talent and college coaches this week for three major basketball exposure events.  With so many players and college coaches in attendance this week for the final stop on the recruiting trail for the July evaluation period, there is bound to be numerous top performances and many opportunities to catch some exciting basketball action in the process. The city of Vegas, while being in the basketball tournament business for many years, has never seen this many top-rated college prospects and college coaches in the state of Nevada at one time.  Never before have we seen…
