Chaparral High School (4-0) won this year’s Paradise Valley Invitational Saturday evening with a big 81-64 championship victory over an athletic Cesar Chavez High School team that got down fast and early, and never recovered. Behind the strong play of unsigned 6-foot-2 senior point guard Colten Kresl, Chaparral led the entire way in this one and never looked back. Chaparral would come out firing in this one in the first period, as Colten Kresl would turn in a superb first quarter for his team – either scoring or assisting on almost every basket in the first quarter. Kresl would knock…

Agua Fria High School (3-0) advanced to the championship game Friday evening with a nice 65-52 victory over visiting Cathedral Prep HS (TX), behind a terrific performance from 6-foot-6 senior wing Bryce Fowler (Sacramento State signee). Fowler came up big for his team on the evening. Agua Fria would come out fast in this one behind a nice effort from 6-foot-1 junior guard Daniel Foster. Bryce Fowler would then get it going after a nice transition layup where he would switch hands in mid-air – giving Agua Fria a 15-12 lead in the first period with 1:54 left to. After…
Sunnyslope High School (2-0) improved to 2-0 on the high school on Tuesday evening with a 52-37 win over a surging but young Rancho Solano High School (1-1) team in this year’s Hoopsgiving Basketball Tournament. I was on hand on the evening to watch a Sunnyslope team that competed for a state title last season, and will have the same opportunity again this year, as they return a loaded lineup. Led by the play of 6-foot-3 junior wing Kyle Fischer, this year’s team will have another opportunity to win it all, once again. The team returns a load of talent…
The 2016-2017 junior college basketball season in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) is now underway, and in full swing. Here are this week’s Players of the Week in men’s basketball in the conference . . . ACCAC D-I Player of the Week: Brandon McGhee, Arizona Western Brandon McGhee led Arizona Western to a split against two tough preseason tests – New Mexico Military and College of Southern Idaho. McGhee averaged 22.5 points, 6.5 assists and 1.5 steals, including a 28-point, 13-assist effort in a losing effort to CSI. For the week he shot 69% from the field to lead the…
After receiving a big offer from a program in the SEC Conference last week, this week Salpointe Catholic High School’s 6-foot-5 superb sophomore wing prospect Majok Deng received another offer for himself – this time from a school in the PAC-12 Conference. This latest offer came while Deng was on a scheduled unofficial recruiting visit to the University of Utah. While on campus, the Utah men’s basketball staff decided to extend the offer to Deng, who is currently among the hottest 2019 prospects in the West. Deng recently received an offer from Vanderbilt University, and also has offers on the…
After a recent Tournament Most Valuable Player performance at this year’s Arizona Preps Fall Showcase, Camelback High School’s 6-foot senior guard Elijah Mead has made his college decision. This week, with many college programs still looking to get involved in his college recruitment, Mead found the right fit for himself and decided to pull the trigger on his college recruitment – electing to choose Hawaii-Pacific University for his college home. While Mead was on the verge of blowing up this spring after several recent strong performances for himself, he chose to end his college recruitment during the early signing period.…
In very surprising fashion today, Jay Green, a 6-foot-5 prep guard/forward for Hillcrest Prep Academy’s post-graduate team, signed a national letter of intent with UNLV. UNLV assistant coach Andre LeFleur was instrumental in signing Green. Green chose UNLV over offers from IPFW, UT-Martin and Prairie View A&M. LeFleur has recently moved to the West Coast after coaching at UCONN for many years and also recently Providence. LeFleur has made a living off recruiting big-time sleeper prospects. His prospects also pan out. Two of LeFleur’s former unheralded prospects that he signed from the state of Arizona were Gavin Edwards (UCONN) and…
Big offers are now pouring in for Salpointe Catholic’s 6-foot-5 superb sophomore wing prospect Majok Deng . Deng became a household name in the Arizona basketball community this club season after leading his Powerhouse Hoops 15U team to numerous wins on the club circuit. As a result, now big-time college programs across the country are taking notice. And they are indeed, as Deng received a big offer over the weekend when Vanderbilt University extended him a scholarship offer. Deng also recently received a scholarship offer from Arizona State University and their head coach Bob Hurley. He also possesses offers from…

One of the better looking prospects in Arizona’s 2019 class is Peoria High School’s 6-foot-7 sophomore post John Price. Showing very well in this year’s recent Arizona Preps Fall Showcase, Price proved why he is considered as a nice post prospect with excellent potential for the future. Price is a good-sized, lengthy stretch 4-man prospect with very good upside for the future, suggesting that he will only continue to grow physically and should develop over time into a serious division-I prospect. He will need to continue to work very hard, but, if he does, this young man has the potential…
