It was one of the best match-ups of the 2017-2018 high school basketball season, in what would become one of the best games of the season. Well, there hasn’t been a better game this season, so maybe it was the best. Filled with serious excitement, rim-rattling dunks, and a final buzzer beater to end the game, the second contest between Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe totally lived up to the billing on Tuesday evening. It was similar to the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight, as the game had amazing interest by the Arizona basketball community, but unlike that fight, this game…
This pre-season when I predicted that the Mountain Pointe Pride would reach the 6A state semi-finals, and would have a chance to win it all this high school season, I had did so understanding the impact that first-year head coach Duane Eason would make on the program. While I knew that Eason’s impact on the program would be immense, no one could have known that it would have been as impactful as it has been. Behind the leadership of Eason and a very experienced staff, which includes my close friend and longtime Arizona Preps’ supporter Kirk Fauske, Mountain Pointe has…
One of the top overall performers in the state this high school season, has been Tucson’s Cienega High School 6-foot-5, 200-pound senior guard Breven Burnett. While soaring under the recruiting radar in Tucson, Arizona, Burnett has put together a very strong senior season for himself, and is worthy of some serious attention from college coaches. Burnett is definitely one of the state’s top sleeper prospects still available and unsigned in Arizona’s 2018 class. While there are still many unsigned prospects in the class, Burnett has proven this high school season why he deserves loads of attention this spring. Burnett led his team…
Phoenix Country Day High School is not well known for their athletics, but rather recognized nationally for their superior academic platform that is provided for their students. The academics at the program is unparalleled in the state, and has created a platform for their students to attend the best colleges in America and even abroad. The school received a huge positive shot in the arm though, after 6-foot-8 sophomore wing Nate Tshimanga became eligible to play on Wednesday evening in the school’s match-up with Horizon Honors HS. While Phoenix Country Day (9-9) is not known for their basketball talent, the…
It looks to be building up to be a very good season for the Canyon Athletic Association (CAA), as the state’s top charter school programs are positioning themselves for a state title run. In the top division of the CAA, Division-III, there are two programs that consistently stand out annually in the division – Tri-City Christian Academy and Skyline Prep. Skyline Prep (11-1) won last year’s Division-III state championship – defeating Tri-City Christian in the state’s final game. This season, Skyline Prep is back under the quality leadership of head coach Jace Romero and re-tooled for another state championship run. …
While many people celebrated a day off on Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, it was more of a day on for the talented prospects from AZ Compass and Bella Vista Prep. Both teams would match-up in an exciting contest that was very high-level that included numerous high-level division-I prospects, and a crowd filled with important members of the Arizona basketball community – making for a very exciting game. National scout Jerry Mullen and also Gregg Rosenberg from Arizona Varsity were in attendance to cover the game, as well as numerous college coaches, including Grand Canyon University assistant coach…
We are now focusing on some of Arizona’s top basketball products to come from the state over the years, and taking at look at what they have done to help Arizona basketball, as well as what they are doing now. Another Arizona basketball legend and another one of the best to ever lace them up in the state of Arizona on the basketball hardwood was former Corona Del Sol High School 1990 graduate Doug Harris. Harris was a big-time winner during his high school basketball career in Arizona, while dominating the state as a player. Since his playing his career, he has turned…
Head Coach Mark Wood and his Liberty Lions would take on Vista Grande – coming fresh off an impressive come-from-behind 99-93 road victory over Willow Canyon HS on Tuesday night. While Vista Grande did not come into the match-up with the very talented Lions with a great record, I was looking forward to seeing their 5-foot-11 talented freshman guard Rai’Shun Wilson square up against Liberty’s star 6-foot-1 junior Josh Ursery. Liberty would pull out of the gates cold as freezer peas, missing wide-open looks, and over-committing on the defensive end, while Vista Grande would get out to an early 5-0 lead…
Cochise and South Mountain Junior College both came into Wednesday evening’s contest tied for first place in the ACCAC Conference, for their respective divisions. While Cochise held the first place spot in the conference for division-I schools, South Mountain was tied for the first place spot for division-II schools with Phoenix College and Pima JC. The division didn’t matter, both programs were simply trying to win to stay atop the conference standings. Cochise Junior College head coach Jerry Carrillo has been among the best junior college head coaches in America for many years, a long time. Carrillo won his 500th career…
