Prescott High School (20-5) has had a wild ride this high school season, behind the amazing exploits of senior guard Uriah Tenette. While Tenette has been absolutely amazing this season, and is closing in on becoming one of the all-time scoring leaders in Arizona basketball history, the play of 6-foot-10, 215-pound senior post Zane Gaul has been consistent, which has helped Prescott to numerous big wins this high school season. Gaul was considered as one of the state's top unsigned recruiting targets this spring, but he is now off the recruiting board, after giving a verbal commitment to Hawaii Pacific University recently.
Gaul has excellent potential for the future, as a result of his size, skillset and upside. Gaul has really developed over the past several years and is a bigger low post talent with excellent size and an ability to run the floor very well. While he is still developing as a post player, Gaul has a soft touch from the perimeter and can score with his back to the basket. He has excellent size on his large frame and takes up a lot of space inside the paint. He has good mobility for his large frame and competes hard and runs the floor very well for his size. While he is still developing his overall offensive skillset, Gaul has numerous college programs intrigued by him and his future potential.
Gaul chose to give a commitment to Hawaii-Pacific after receiving very strong Division-II college interest and offers from numerous D-II programs, including Arizona Christian University and Cal Poly Pomona. Gaul also received his share of Division-I college interest as well, but did not receive a Division-I offer for himself. While he potentially could have gone to a bigger program this spring, if he had decided to wait, but Gaul's decision to sign with a Division-II program, especially one in such a nice area, became a much better option for immediate playing time for Gaul in college.
Gaul has had an excellent varsity career for himself as well, as he has posted strong numbers throughout his career, and has improved his statistical numbers each season as well. Currently, Gaul is averaging 18.6 points, 11.2 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per/game for Prescott, which has had another terrific season. Gaul's ability to produce in the low post this season, has helped his stud teammate Uriah Tenette get off, as the combination of Tenette and Gaul have become one of the elite one-two punches in the state.
Gaul and Tenette have led the Prescott to a very exciting season this year and a strong finish to the high school season, as they went undefeated and won the Grand Canyon Region. Prescott will now compete for this year's Open Division State Championship, and also a potential 4A State Championship. This is Prescott's best chance to win it all this season, and dedicated Head Coach Travis Stedman will have his team ready to make a big run late this season. Prescott will face a talented Brophy Prep team on Wednesday (2/19) in the opening round of the Open Division State Playoffs.
Congratulations to Zane Gaul, his family, the Prescott basketball program and also his club program, The Factory and Head Coach Kenny Mullins on this accomplishment from our staff.
Arizona Hoop Review Scouting Report: Gaul is a developing low post talent with excellent size and an ability to run the floor very well. He has excellent size on his large frame and has improved at a good pace throughout his high school career. He has good upside still for the college level and a good overall skillset. He has a soft touch from the perimeter, and also can score effectively inside the paint or with his back to the basket. Has a good jump hook and is a good finisher around the basket, although more explosiveness off the floor will benefit him a great deal over time in his effectiveness at the college level. Gaul is a rare find today, as he has exceptional size, but also good mobility for his large frame. An active rebounder that takes up a lot of space around the basket, and keeps the ball up high on offensive put-backs. A capable shot-blocker. A very good overall sleeper post prospect for the right college program.
