In the current recruiting landscape, high school seniors face more challenges than ever before. With the NCAA Transfer Portal overflowing with thousands of college players seeking new opportunities, many high school prospects are being overlooked, despite their talent, work ethic and upside. Arizona is no exception. Across the state, there are numerous unsigned seniors who still deserve serious college attention. One of the best examples? Mesa High School’s 6-foot-3 senior forward John Petersen.

A 6-foot-3 senior forward, Petersen (pictured left) played a major role in helping lead Mesa to a 22-8 overall record and a runner-up finish in the 6A State Championship game this season. His impact on the floor was undeniable all season long, as he provided leadership, toughness and consistency on both ends of the court. Unfortunately, Petersen suffered a season-ending injury late in the year, forcing him to miss the remainder of the season—and altering the trajectory of Mesa’s title hopes. Without his presence, the team came up just short in the championship, but many close to the program believe that with a healthy Petersen, Mesa might’ve hoisted the trophy.

Petersen is the type of player every coach wants in their program. He’s a tough, athletic, hard-nosed competitor who brings energy and physicality. He’s a strong rebounder and finisher around the rim, defends at a high level and is capable of guarding bigger players in the paint, as a result of his strength and grit. Offensively, he has a solid low-post and mid-range game, and he continues to improve as a three-point shooter. Beyond the numbers, he’s a high-character player and an excellent teammate who makes winning plays and does the dirty work that often goes unnoticed.

Despite his shortened season, Petersen has drawn interest from several junior college programs. Still, many coaches simply haven’t had the chance to see his full body of work due to his late injury. That’s a mistake. For the right college program, whether JUCO, NAIA, or D-2, John Petersen is a valuable addition who could thrive at the next level with the right opportunity and development.

In a recruiting climate where high school players often get overlooked, especially following injuries, it’s important to spotlight athletes like John Petersen. He’s a winner, a worker and a sleeper prospect who can make a serious impact at the college level.
