Here are the top returning sophomore prospects this year in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC). While there will definitely be many more top-rated juco sophomore prospects discovered this season, and also at the up-and-coming ACCAC JUCO Jamboree held at Chandler-Gilbert Junior College on Saturday, October 14th, here are the top returning prospects in the conference from last season (In no particular order) . . .
Andre Jones 6-6 SOPH SF Arizona Western JC (Yuma, AZ)
Jones is a very strong, well-built physical specimen with a nice frame for the collegiate level and very good athleticism. He doesn't have a true position on the floor, and plays as a combo-forward for Arizona Western. His best position should be as a small forward over time - a position that he will need to embrace and develop over the next year to prepare for the division-I level. Jones is a good mid-range shooter and a good scorer around the basket, but still needs to add consistency to his shot from longer ranges. He is at his best when attacking the basket and moving without the basketball, where he is difficult to keep off the glass and can finish strong at the rim. Plays above the rim and is an excellent finisher. He is an OK ball handler and passer, and will need to continue to focus on these two areas of his game to develop and progress for the future, but his sheer athleticism and physical strength are glaring attributes that make him an attractive prospect.
James Hampshire 7-0 SOPH C Mesa Junior College (Mesa, AZ)
A very long and athletic post player with excellent energy on the floor. Hampshire is always moving, whether on the floor or not, and has an excellent overall motor with a very live body. Runs the floor hard and is an excellent finisher in transition for his size. Has a very long frame which allows him to make plays most post player cannot. A good low-post scorer and finisher inside the paint. Has good low-post footwork. Has good hands and feet. OK post moves, still raw offensively. Has a good jump hook. An active rebounder that rebounds outside of his area. An excellent shotblocker that changes or alters shots and keeps balls in play. Has excellent potential for the future and upside as a player. Could see high-major recruitment as a result of his tremendous upside.
Shadeed Shabazz 6-1 SOPH PG/SG Cochise College (Douglass, AZ)
A native of Washington where he attended Rainer Beach HS (WA). A left-handed and sleek scoring guard that is capable of playing both guard positions on the floor, but likes to score the basketball from the off-guard position. He enjoys scoring the basketball. He has a slick handle of the basketball, which allows him to break down defenses. He also has an explosive burst off the dribble, which allows him to blow past defenders in the half court set. Very good in transition, pushes the basketball up the floor. A good shooter from mid-range and also has three-point consistency, but at his best off the dribble and getting to the basket. A very good defender with good lateral quickness. The top returning scorer in the ACCAC this season.
Davon Bolton 6-1 SOPH PG/SG Eastern Arizona JC (Thatcher, AZ)
A native of Seattle, Washington where he attended Cleveland HS (WA). A quick and explosive guard prospect with an excellent perimeter shooting stroke with range and a quick release , which he gets off effectively. Very quick off the dribble and gets anywhere he wants on the floor, and capitalizes at a high rate – shooting an excellent percentage from the floor. Shoots a high percentage from the field (40.8% as a freshman) and also three-point distance (42% as a freshman). Also shot 81% from the free-throw line as a freshman. A very good ball handler and passer that sees the floor, but likes to score the basketball. A scoring point guard. Pushes the basketball up the floor. A good defender with very good lateral quickness. A very good on-the-ball defender. A good rebounder for his size. Among the top returning scorers in the ACCAC conference this season.
Ferron Flavors 6-4 SOPH SG South Mountain JC (Phoenix, AZ)
A native of Seattle, Washington where he attended Federal Way HS (WA). Very few prospects have Flavors' ability to shoot the basketball, and make also make shots. He can play both guard positions on the floor also - making him an attractive prospect for the next level. A combo-guard prospect, Flavors likes to have the basketball in his hands, but is at his best when catching and shooting the basketball. Has excellent range on his shot and is a threat to score from anywhere on the floor. A good ball handler and passer. Pushes the basketball ahead with the pass. A fundamentally sound performer. A solid rebounder but needs to focus more on this area of his game to reach his full potential as a player. A good defender that plays passing lanes. Has good toughness and plays with excellent enthusiasm. A solid all around prospect for the mid-major level.
Kendrick Williams 6-0 SOPH PG Chandler-Gilbert JC (Chandler, AZ)
A well-built guard, Williams performed at a very high level as a freshman starter for Chandler-Gilbert. He has the ability to use a quick burst of speed to get by defenders and get to the basket, where he thrives off finishing through contact and converting on difficult shots. Williams also has the ability to get hot in a hurry from outside, as he can rattle off many 3-pointers in a row, if left open and given time and space. He also excels in transition, as he likes to push the ball out and get a quick score for him or one of his teammates - if they are open to score. Has excellent overall toughness as a player, and passion on both ends of the court. Williams also has the ability to be a solid floor general on the court, as he looks for his teammates as much as he seeks his own shot. A very good ball handler and passer. An excellent rebounder for his size, and among the top returning rebounders in the conference. Makes players on the floor better. An excellent sleeper prospect.
Lavette Parker 6-1 SOPH SG Phoenix College (Phoenix, AZ)
Parker is one of the best returning shooters in the conference. A potential combo-guard prospect that is at his best from the shooting guard position, since he likes to take three-point shot attempts as the basis for his offensive repertoire. Has good range on his shot and a quick release. Parker can get hot in a split-second, and really knocks down shots from anywhere (thrives hitting shots off screens). He also can push the ball well in transition and can finish at the rim after taking some bumps. A solid ball handler and passer. Parker also has a nice frame on him, and can really defend well when he is engaged. Received an offer from UTEP, during his freshman season.
Jacob Inclan 6-3 SOPH SF/PF South Mountain Junior College (Phoenix, AZ)
Inclan was among the top producing prospects in the conference as a freshman – ranking among the ACCAC league leaders in points (20 ppg) and rebounds (12.3 rpb). While he should be rated much higher in these rankings as a result of his overall superb production, he does not have a true position on the floor, and plays like a very undersized power forward. He is a good mid-range shooter of the basketball and has a serious knack for scoring around the paint, but he is limited in his range on his shot. While he has the ability to make three-pointers, he will need to prove in his sophomore season that he can to raise his overall college recruitment. A solid ball handler and passer. A strong finisher around the basket. A very strong rebounder that rebounds much bigger than his size suggests. Has excellent toughness as a player. An excellent sleeper prospect.
Brandon McGhee 6-2 SOPH PG Arizona Western JC (Yuma, AZ)
A native of Oakland, California. A nice looking guard prospect that is a floor general for his team and has good overall leadership skills. A shooting-guard prospect that is at his best catching and shooting the basketball, which he can do from almost anywhere on the floor. Has good range on his shot and a quick release. Shoots a good percentage from either the field or three-point distance. A good finisher when he decides to get to the basket. A solid ball handler and passer. His skill level allows him to play with his back to the basket and also to go out on the perimeter and make plays for himself as well. Plummer is a mis-match for most opposing forwards, as he can score around the basket with a nice, left-handed touch and also shoot the basketball effectively from the perimeter with a quick release. He is also able to put the basketball on the floor and make plays for himself and others - a nice attribute. He is also a very good athlete for his size and gets off the floor well.
