This trio of players for Sunnyslope High School (21-8) has taken their team to the state championship. In the two games I watched of Sunnyslope this postseason, it was against Boulder Creek and Millennium High School.
In the first matchup, star junior Rider Portela played amazingly on both sides of the ball having 12 points. He almost had a double-double though, but not with rebounds. He finished this game with 8 steals - using his extremely long arms to get in passing lanes and disrupting the offensive players.
In the game against Millennium his shots weren’t falling, only having 2 points, but he was doing everything else - grabbing rebounds and defending super hard. He finished this game with 7 rebounds and 2 steals. But, towards the end of the game on one of the most important defensive possessions for Sunnyslope, he came up with the steal.
The point guard for this team is one of the best, that is sophomore guard Delton Prescott. He is one of the best passers in all of the AIA. Along with that, he is a bucket getter as well. He can score from behind the line and uses his body well to score on layups that you didn’t even think were possible. In the game against Boulder Creek, he had 15 points and against Millennium he had 23 - carrying the offense for Sunnyslope.
Along with the star sophomore point guard, Sunnyslope also has a star big man in star sophomore post Darius Wabbington. He is one of the best bigs in the class of 2027, and it showed in the two games I watched. Against Boulder Creek, he was making his presence known on both sides of the floor - finishing this game with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Against Millennium, he finished with 7 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. His use of his body and post-work was unbelievable in both of these games, along with the fact that he changed many shots.
Sunnyslope won both of these games against Boulder Creek and Millennium. On March 8th Sunnyslope will take on Perry for the Open Division State Championship, which should be a good one.
