Mesa Community College 6-foot-4 sophomore guard Talbot Cummard has worked hard over the past two years to make himself into a very good four-year college prospect. After a nice career at Mesa High School, Cummard played his freshman season for Eastern Arizona College, before coming back home for his sophomore season and playing for hard-working head coach Lester Neal and his coaching staff. A member of the prestigious Cummard family, which has produced many top-rated players from the family over the years in the state of Arizona, Talbot Cummard is the latest member of the family to produce at a high level.
Recently, Cummard was selected as the NJCAA National Player of the Week, after he recently produced an impressive triple-double performance against Phoenix College. For his accomplishments, Cummard was named the ACCAC D-II Men's Basketball Player of the Week, and then was named as the NJCAA D-II Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
In the game against Phoenix College, Cummard had a career game against the Bears as he posted 10 points, 12 rebounds and 13 assists in Mesa's 75-67 victory. Cummard has had an excellent season for Mesa JC (8-17, 5-10), as he has had (10) games of 15 points or more, (5) games of 20 points, or more, and he has also exploded for (2) 30-point performances this season. Cummard is currently averaging 15.6 points, 5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per/game.
Cummard is a skilled guard prospect that can play as a 2 or 3 position on the court. He is a solid shooter from three-point distance, but is more of a versatile guard that has a solid mid-range game and also can score on drives to the basket. He is still developing his consistency from longer ranges, but is a good ball handler and passer, and is also an active rebounder. Cummard is also a very good teammate that competes hard and does the intangibles it takes for a team to win. He will be a very good prospect for a smaller college program this spring, and his exploits this season should help him garner recruiting attention this spring for himself.
I will continue to follow the Mesa JC program as we near the post-season for the ACCAC, and look for Cummard to finish off this season strong for the Thunderbirds. Congratulations again to Cummard on the season he has had, and also for this tremendous honor.
