One of the top overall performers this high school season in the state of Arizona was North Canyon High School's 6-foot-4 versatile senior guard Wyatt Mackay. Mackay put up tremendous numbers this senior season, and raised many eyebrows with his play - enough to earn himself loads of recruiting attention and several offers for himself. As a result, Mackay became one of the hotter overall guard prospects in the state this high school season. After mulling over his options for his college future, Mackay has now decided on a college program for his immediate college basketball future.
This week, Mackay announced that he has decided to sign a national letter of intent with Western New Mexico University, and will play for Arizona native and former Scottsdale Community College Head Coach Mark Bunker and his staff. Bunker got on Mackay early in the recruiting process, and was able to build a strong relationship with Mackay. Bunker's efforts won out in the end as he has landed one of the better sleeper prospects in Arizona 2024 Class.
Mackay had a terrific senior season for himself, as he had some of the best overall statistical numbers in the state this season - averaging 26.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per/game. Mackay's numbers were the best of his high school career, as he looked focused all season to prepare himself for the college level this fall.
Mackay had a very strong high school career under Head Coach Mike O'Guinn, and he and Coach O'Guinn went out with a bang this season, as Mackay ranked among the top overall scorers in the country this high school season, and O'Guinn made this season his last varsity season of coaching. Mackay is a tough, no-nonsense prospect that plays with good focus and a scorer's mentality, and will have a good future.
Congratulations to Mackay and his family on this nice accomplishment from our staff here at Arizona Preps. Also congrats to Coach O'Guinn and his North Canyon coaching staff, as well as to Mark Bunker on recruiting Arizona.
Arizona Hoop Review Scouting Report: Mackay is a good looking college prospect, as he is a very physical guard prospect for his size. He is aggressive by nature and does not mind physical contact. His ability to shoot the basketball with range on his shot, and also drive hard to the basket and draw physical contact from defenders, has made him difficult for opposing defenders to defend. He does have a bit of an unorthodox shooting style and stroke, but he makes shot at a high clip and with defenders draped all over him. He is at his best maneuvering his way to the basket through defenders in the lane, which he does quite well and consistently, which allows him to get to the free-throw line quite often as well. He is a bull with the ball in his hands and has excellent toughness as player. A good ball handler and a willing passer that moves and pushes the ball. He is also a good rebounder from the guard position, although he can be even better in this area over time with more focus. Mackay has vey good versatility as a player, and is able to play several positions on the floor. Defensively, he can guard multiple positions as well, but I would also like to see him focus more defensively on his ability to guard the ball handler, to maximize his potential as a player and prospect.
