The majority of Arizona's top-rated prospects in the 2025 Class are still looking to receive more college recruitment, but Cesar Chavez High School's skilled 6-foot-3, 180-pound junior guard Lex Clontz has found his college fit and home for the future. Clontz announced his big decision on social media on Tuesday afternoon - giving a nice verbal commitment to Embry Riddle University and new Head Coach Ben Tucker and his coaching staff.
It seemed like just yesterday that Clontz was a mere freshman starter for Chavez, and was breaking records for most three-pointers in a game. Clontz emerged on the Arizona high school basketball scene in a major way early in the recruiting process, and quickly received an offer from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), suggesting that many more offers could pour in for Clontz. While he was just beginning to realize his college recruitment, Clontz decided to pull the trigger and end his college recruitment - giving a nice verbal commitment to Embry Riddle, a high academic institution located in Arizona, and a basketball program definitely on the rise under Tucker's leadership.
Clontz has had a terrific high school career for himself, and is coming off a strong junior season where he led his program to a nice 25-4 overall record on the season, and in the state's top 6A Division. Clontz averaged 17 points, 2.6 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.8 steals per/contest this high school season.
Clontz is a specialist as a shooter, and is considered by our staff as one of the elite shooters of the basketball in the state, regardless of class. He has a quick release on his shot and unlimited range, which allows him to shoot the basketball from anywhere on the floor - making him difficult to defend for opposing defenses. He stretches the floor consistently and also is fundamentally sound. A good ball handler and passer as well, Clontz also has a nice mid-range game and is able to create his own shot. He drives hard to the basket and is a good finisher in the lane also. He will definitely improve in this area of his game, as he continues to mature physically. He is a solid rebounder, but I would like to see him progress in this area as well to maximize his potential as a player and prospect.
Clontz has already had a strong high school career, and now, with his college recruitment out of the way, I look for Clontz to have a huge senior season for himself, and put up very impressive numbers, as he looks to lead Cesar Chavez to a 6A State Championship next season.
Congratulations to Lex Clontz, his family and his supporters on this accomplishment, as well as to his UH Elite club program on this commitment. Great luck to him in his immediate future.
