Arizona's 2018 class is still developing for college coaches to take a hard look at, and Buena High School's 6-foot junior point man Dominic Mooney recently emerged at this year's Arizona Preps Fall Showcase as one of the elite point guards in the class.
While I had not yet seen Mooney play before this year's event, he more than made up for lost time with his performance - displaying a serious ability to play the game and while playing against elite competition. While in a serious match-up against Hillcrest Prep senior point guard Virshon Cotton, who has numerous division-I offers, Mooney stole the show in the game and held his own quite well against Cotton - proving that he can play with anyone.
Mooney is a serious talent from the point guard position on the floor. Very tough physically with a nice, compact body, Mooney plays both ends of the floor hard and brings the fight to his competition. He is an aggressive floor general that gets into the lane almost at will - able to create off the dribble and also finish in traffic. He also gets to the free-throw line often, as a result of his aggressive style of play.
He is a very good ball handler and passer, and finds the open man on the floor. He also pushes the basketball up the floor every chance he gets, while also being able to finish well in transition.
He is a good shooter of the basketball with good range on his shot. He also has a good mid-range game and is able to stop and pop off the dribble. He is an excellent on the ball defender and has very quick hands and feet, and also plays passing lanes.
The Buena HS team will be very good this high school season, as they are loaded with young talent, led by Mooney, 6-foot-4 junior wing David Featherston and 6-foot-2 junior guard Quayshawn Lasua-Gentry. Mooney though will be the catalyst for this year's team's success, and head coach Dave Glasgow is in extremely good shape this time around. This team will be very tough to beat this season.
I will be keeping a close eye on Mooney over the next year, as college coaches will soon be in contact with this young man, as I now promoting him among the best sleeper prospects in Arizona's 2018 class.
