Former Arizona Heat boy’s club basketball president/head coach Elliott Glabman has been out of the Arizona high school basketball business for a number of years, but will soon be returning to Arizona basketball. Glabman operated the Heat basketball program in Arizona for 13 years and helped to produce many of Arizona’s top basketball talent – helping many student-athletes in the state land college scholarships at every level. Glabman left the game of basketball in 2005 to concentrate on his health.  He underwent numerous back surgeries and now has recovered to the level where he can focus on aiding the lives of Arizona youth once again. While Mesa Mountain View (29-3) would come up just short this high school season on winning the state title, the future is extremely bright for the Toros’ girls basketball program. The All-Arizona Showcase & Combine took place on Sunday at the very nice Avondale Sports Complex.  With more than 150 different prospects in action on the day from each of the high school classes (freshmen through seniors), the event was well attended and gave our staff an opportunity to see many of the state’s best basketball prospects in one venue – before the spring evaluation period. Corona Del Sol High School’s 6-foot-2 sophomore point guard Casey Benson has been selected as our 2012 Arizona Preps Boys Player of the Year. Benson is coming off an excellent sophomore season where he led his Corona Del Sol High School boys basketball team to this year’s 2012 Division-I State Championship, after a big 66-53 championship win over Cesar Chavez HS. St. Mary’s 5-foot-11 senior guard/forward Shilpa Tummala has been selected as the 2012 Arizona Preps Girls Player of the Year. Tummala is coming off an amazing senior season, where she helped lead her St. Mary’s Knights to this year’s 2012 Division-I State Championship, after an impressive championship victory over a surging Hamilton HS team – 65-40.  Tummala also helped lead the Knights to the Section-I Tournament Championship. South Mountain High School’s 6-foot-3, 165-pound senior combo-guard prospect Allante Smith is a name many in the Arizona basketball community have not heard of, but this young man is definitely a nice prospect for college programs to take a strong look at. The spring will be a very busy period for both high school boys and girls basketball prospects in the state of Arizona, as many of the state’s top prospects are still available and unsigned. Cactus High School’s very versatile 5-foot-11, 145-pound senior guard/forward Sydney Mullings is one of the state’s top unsigned girls prospects still on the board.
