With the high school basketball season coming to a close this week, showcase events and club tournaments will now begin to take center stage throughout the spring and summer.  Event organizer Chad Groth has made showcase events and club tournaments his specialty, and he kicked off the spring season with this year’s Arizona Spring Showcase last weekend on the campus of Arizona Christian University. For the 3rd consecutive year and the 7th time in 11 seasons, Phoenix College (27-5) has won the Region-I Division-II title with a big 84-65 victory Friday evening over Tohono O’odham Junior College.  The win came at home in front of a sellout crowd.  Phoenix College also won this year’s ACCAC Conference title this season under head coach Matt Gordon and his staff. It was the second consecutive year that Phoenix College faced Tohono O’Odham JC in the D-II championship game. Phoenix College (26-5) has been absolutely terrific the last two years – winning the Division-II national championship last year, and then returning this season to win the ACCAC Conference Championship.  Phoenix College head coach Matt Gordon and his star player, terrific sophomore guard Brandon Brown, were both selected as Coach of the Year and Player of the Year selections this season. 5-foot-6 senior point guard Dyesha Stahley was not about to sit out the state championship game – an opportunity for her Dobson team to prove that they were destined to win it all this season.  Dobson (30-2) had a terrific season, but many basketball enthusiasts in the state were beginning to believe that other teams would get it done instead. The 4-peat is now complete for Corona Del Sol High School!  Unreal and consistent total dominance from the Aztec basketball program, that won their 70th game in a row against Arizona high school competition on Monday evening at Gila River Arena.  The 70th consecutive victory also meant a fourth-straight Division-I State Championship for the Aztecs. When Gilbert Christian High School moved up to the Division-II Class in the state, anyone that knows basketball in this state knew it would just become a matter of time before this program began to dominate the Division-II ranks, as they had done in the Division-III Class before it.  Well that time has now arrived – again. This high school season, Basha High School’s gifted and athletic 6-foot-10 junior post Devin Kirby suffered a horrific injury during the McClintock Holiday Shootout basketball tournament on the campus of McClintock High School.  The injury came in the championship game of the event, as his team faced rival, Perry HS. Just before the end to the first quarter and with 1 minute on the clock, Kirby would fall to the floor after attempting to make an offensive play.  Kirby would lie on the floor in absolute and sheer pain.  Kirby would eventually receive assistance from a group of paramedics that…

The state has never seen anything like Corona Del Sol High School’s 6-foot-11 freshman post Marvin Bagley, but most basketball enthusiasts in the state have also never seen anything like the Corona Del Sol basketball program.  Corona (32-1) has won the last 3-consecutive Division-I state titles in the state, and has also won an eye-popping 69 consecutive games against Arizona high school programs. It was a coming-out party for Millennium’s 5-foot-11 senior forward Quynne Huggins in Millennium High School’s big 52-43 Division-I state semi-final victory over top-ranked Desert Vista High School at Grand Canyon University.  Huggins has been consistent in her play all season long, but on Friday evening she was absolutely terrific – leading her team to the school’s first ever state championship game.
