After four years of torching the nets in Arizona high school basketball, it has all come to a nice close for Peoria High School's 6-foot2 senior guard Andrew Camacho, as he has led his Peoria (28-4) program to this year's 4A State Championship, after a nice 65-57 state final victory over a gritty Deer Valley High School team. In the championship victory, Camacho finished with a game-high 22 points in the win - rounding out one of the best high school careers in Arizona history.
Since entering the high school ranks, Camacho absolutely went off immediately, and was consistent throughout his high school career - ranking among the top scorers of the basketball ever in Arizona high school basketball history. For his career, Camacho averaged 21 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.2 steals per/game. Camacho raised his numbers every year, although he averaged 26.5 points per/game as a junior, and, as a senior, Camacho only averaged a modest 25.6 points per/contest. This young man is a scoring machine and one of the best pure shooters and scorers of the basketball that we have in the state.
After helping lead his Peoria team to the state finals as a freshman starter, it was only fitting that Camacho would get another opportunity as a senior to win it all. While Peoria would finish as a runner-up in 2020 to Salpointe Catholic High School in overtime, Camacho would leave it all on the floor on Thursday evening - leading his team to the 4A State Championship.
While Camacho has yet to receive loads of college interest for himself, he is well deserving of many scholarship offers, as he has put in work in Arizona basketball, and also was strong on the club circuit as well throughout his career. I fell in love with his intensity, competitiveness, ability to score and shoot the basketball and finish over and around defenders. I have always loved Camacho's competitive spirit on the basketball court and have always been intrigued by his ability to score at a high rate among Arizona competition, but after observing and evaluating him consistently throughout the club season, I came away as a serious fan of this young man's ability and love for the game.
Camacho comes from a strong basketball family, led by his amazing father, Martin Camacho. Martin played at Peoria High School, and is among the top club coaches in the state - coaching his son to become the player he is today. Andrew Camacho has been taught extremely well by his father, who has created a monster in his son. An offensive killer that competes hard every night and with passion.
Andrew Camacho is a terrific student-athlete as well with an amazing 4.6 CUM GPA, and desires to work in the medical field in the future, maybe as a pediatrician or a dermatologist. He is a very well-rounded young man that deserves the recognition.
Congratulations to Andrew Camacho on an excellent high school career for himself, and also congratulations to the Peoria High School basketball program on winning this year's 4A State Championship. Thanks for all the memories Drew from our Arizona Preps' staff, and good luck to him in the future, as he will be successful in whatever he does in the future.
Arizona Hoop Review Scouting Report: Camacho is a combo-guard amidst Arizona competition, able to play either guard position and play at an elite level. In college, wherever he ultimately lands at, he will need and want to play the point guard position full-time, but is able to move into the scoring role quite well, as he is a pure shooter of the basketball with a quick release and unlimited range on his shot. Camacho is a sniper as a shooter, and is also able to place maximum pressure on opposing defenses due to his ability to drive and finish from mid-range or at the basket. He is a strong driver of the basketball that plays physical and gets to the free-throw line quite often, as a result. He can also run a team quite well and get the basketball to the open man on the floor, while also being able to create scoring opportunities for his teammates as well. Camacho is a leader on and off the basketball court, which makes him valuable to any team that he plays for.
