After spending his first three years developing in one of Arizona’s premier high school basketball programs, 6-foot-9 rising senior post Ashton Musser is now ready to step into a bigger role, as he recently announced his transfer from St. Mary’s High School to Deer Valley High School for his senior season. This is a big announcement by Musser, who will immediately add true size and a strong willingness to compete for terrific Head Coach Jed Dunn and his coaching staff. Musser is just what the highly successful Deer Valley program needed to continue their dominance in the West Valley, and to compete for another 4A State Championship.
During his time at St. Mary’s, Musser was surrounded by elite talent and a championship-level culture. He played behind some of the nation's top players, including nationally regarded 6-foot-11 superstar and Duke signee Cam Williams, as Musser backed up Williams for two seasons. Those years of competing every day in practice and learning how to win at the highest level have prepared him for this next chapter of his basketball career.
Now, Ashton arrives at Deer Valley with a tremendous opportunity to showcase his ability under Head Coach Judd Dunn, one of the winningest coaches in the state. Deer Valley has developed into one of Arizona’s strongest programs under Dunn’s leadership, and Ashton’s addition gives the team a major piece it needed - size, toughness, and experience. Deer Valley is also much closer to Musser's home, which will make an enjoyable senior season for him.
Standing out with his size and toughness, Musser brings leadership, a winning mentality and a strong work ethic with him. The move gives him the chance to take everything he learned at St. Mary’s and apply it in a much larger role next season. Look for Ashton to make a significant impact this summer and heading into his senior season. With his experience, size, determination and opportunity ahead of him, the stage is set for a breakout year and to become a key piece of another strong Deer Valley basketball team.
Musser is a rare find in the state, as a result of his sheer size. He is the son of former Carl Hayden High School standout performer Skyler Musser, who dominated the state for several years during his high school career, before moving on to the collegiate ranks and also playing professionally for some time.
Great luck to Musser in his senior season from our staff here @ Arizona Preps. One of my favorite people in Arizona high school basketball, as he has high character and an excellent personality.
Arizona Preps Scouting Report: Musser is a rare find in the state, as he has serious size and girth that allow him to gain excellent low post position inside the paint, where he likes to finish strong and use physical contact to gain an edge on opposing low-post players. He has an excellent attitude and competes hard on both ends of the floor. He is not overly athletic but possesses very good footwork in the post, and a variety of low post moves. He is improving as a finisher inside and around the paint, and has a developing shooting stroke out to 15 feet. He does most of his work inside the paint and enjoys physical contact. A true post player. He runs the floor hard and looks to get easy baskets in transition. Plays with strong confidence and is a true competitor. Still has upside as a player. A good sleeper prospect. he really needs a breakout season and touches to develop his potential as a player and as a college prospect.
