One of the most athletic guard prospects in the state is on the rise, literally. Mesa High School's gifted 6-foot sophomore guard Daijon Grayson is one of the most talented performers in Arizona's 2027 Class, and has turned in a very good sophomore season for himself - a breakout season of sorts. Mesa High School (15-4) is having an excellent season thus far in the state's top 6A Division, and Grayson has been a major reason for the success of the Mesa program this season. While small in size, this young and very bouncy guard prospect has serious college potential for the future, and is one of my favorite guard prospects in Arizona's 2027 Class.
Mesa HS Head Coach Scott Stansberry is one of the elite coaches in the state. He gets the most out of his players and puts them in positions to be successful. Stansberry inherited the services of superstar freshman guard Kyi Kyi Miles this season, and he has been able to add Miles to his backcourt, while still being able to utilize the superb talents of Daijon Grayson in the Mesa backcourt, alongside Miles. Grayson quickly learned to play with Miles quickly, and the two young gifted and skilled guards have flourished this season. Grayson has gone to another level in his sophomore season, and has everyone believing that he will become a Division-I guard in the future.
Grayson has grown a great deal from his freshman season, and will continue to grow, which will benefit him nicely in his ability to score the basketball and see the floor. He is an excellent scorer of the basketball already, as he is very quick off the dribble and very difficult for opposing guards to stay in front of him. He can get to anywhere he wants on the floor, and the ball in his hands is on a string. Grayson has an impressive vertical leap and he gets up very high when he is in the lane and looking to score over bigger defenders. In the open floor, Grayson has already had numerous explosive dunks this season. He thrives in the open floor and in a fast-paced system. He is a floor general with the basketball in his hands and sees the floor very well, and actually is capable of seeing plays before they happen. He has always been a floor general and a pass-first point guard, and now he is becoming a big-time scorer of the basketball as well. His next two high schools seasons will definitely prove that.
Grayson is an elite defender with quick hands and feet, and is able to stay in front of his man quite easily, and is able to apply serious pressure on opposing guards. He is a lock-down defender, which will suit him nicely over time, as he will be able to play immediately in college. Grayson is still very young as a mere sophomore, and he should round into a really good guard prospect over the next two high school seasons.
Grayson is having a strong sophomore season on a Mesa team that has now won (9) games in a row on the season. Grayson's play has been a major reason, as he is averaging 9.6 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 3.2 steals per/game this season. Mesa has a favorable schedule down the stretch and for the remainder of the season, which will include two games against rival Mesa Mountain View, which is always a very exciting contest.
Grayson and the Mesa basketball program have a very bright future ahead of them, as they are a very young team with excellent potential for the future, and are very well coached by Stansberry and his tremendous staff. The Mesa basketball culture is one of a kind in the state of Arizona, and they have a lot to be very excited about for the future. Grayson and the Mesa basketball program are on the rise.
