The spring recruiting period continues to bring major developments across Arizona, and another talented prospect has secured his future at the Division-I level. Sandra Day O'Connor High School's athletic and talented 6-foot-5 senior Melvin Stubbs Jr. has officially committed to Sacramento State University - giving Head Coach Mike Bibby and his staff a highly intriguing prospect with tremendous upside. Stubbs becomes one of the growing number of Arizona high school prospects to earn Division-I opportunities straight out of high school - an achievement that has become increasingly rare in today’s recruiting landscape, heavily impacted by the NCAA Transfer Portal. With college programs placing a premium on experienced transfers, high school players must stand out significantly to earn scholarships at the highest level. Stubbs has done exactly that.
A long, athletic wing with a strong physical frame, Stubbs brings a combination of size, athleticism and developing skill that projects very well at the next level. He is a versatile offensive player who can create his own shot, attack defenders off the dribble, and thrive in the open floor. His ability to run in transition and finish plays makes him especially dangerous in up-tempo situations, where his athleticism is most evident.
Stubbs is also a player whose game continues to evolve. With a solid overall skill-set already in place, he has shown the ability to impact the game in multiple ways, and his best basketball is clearly still ahead of him. As he continues to develop physically and refine his skill set, he has the potential to become a very productive player at the Division-I level.
He is coming off a good senior season, where helped lead a very talented Sandra Day O’Connor team to a 20-9 overall record in Arizona’s highly competitive 6A Division. While the Eagles did not fully meet the expectations that many had for them entering the season, there is no question the roster was loaded with high-level talent - and college coaches across the country took notice.
Stubbs was part of one of the most talented cores in the state, teaming up with fellow Division-I prospects 6-foot-7 senior Ryland Parsley, who recently committed to Fresno State, 6-foot-7 senior Colton Watson, a commit to Lehigh University and 6-foot-5 sophomore Terrence Byrd, one of the top young prospects in Arizona currently.
Despite the team not reaching its full potential, the sheer level of talent on the roster speaks volumes, as multiple players have now secured Division-I opportunities - further validating the strength of the program and the level of competition Stubbs faced on a daily basis.
Stubbs also represents another success story from the powerful AZ Select club program, which has consistently produced loads of Division-I talent, and continues to serve as a pipeline for college coaches recruiting in Arizona. His development through both the high school and club ranks has prepared him well for the next level.
Now headed to Sacramento State, Stubbs will have the opportunity to continue his growth under the guidance of legendary Mike Bibby, a former NBA standout who is building a strong foundation within the program. With his physical tools, athletic ability, and scoring potential, Stubbs is a player who could develop into a key contributor over time.
Congratulations to Melvin Stubbs Jr. and his family, as well as the AZ Select program and the Sandra Day O’Connor High School program, on this outstanding accomplishment from our Arizona Preps staff.
