PPHoenix Prep 6-foot-10, 190-pound junior forward Matur Dhal is a talented prospect that is now on the rise, after a strong perofrmance this past weekend at the West Coast Elite All-Star Camp held this past weekend @ The PHHacility. In the event, Dhal performed at a high level and was selected among the top overall performers from the camp.
A native of South Sudan, Dhal came to the United States just two years ago and played last season at Paradise Honors High School, where he was a very good contributor on a very talented team that finished 22-6. This season, Dhal will suit up for a new and talented PHHoenix Prep program, that will feature many of the state's top high school prospects.
Dhal is coming off his best perfomance to date this past weekend, where he showed a very good overall skillset and versatility for a tall, lengthy prospect with very good mobility. At 6-10 in heigth, Dhal plays much like a small forward, 3/4 prospect that is able to score inside and out, while also being able to rebound outside of his area and push the basketball on the break and make plays for himself and others in transition. Dhal is a rare find in the state at his size and length, and he is a prospect definitely on the rise in the state's 2021 Class.
Dhal's performance this weekend was consistent throughout the weekend's WCE event, and he was the top overall 2021 prospect in the camp, or atleast he was considered to be after a strong Top 20 all-star performance this weekend.
Currently, Dhal does not possess a division-I scholarship offer to his credit, but he is worthy and should soon receive many of them over the next year or so, as a result of his size, length and versatility. He is able to defend several positions on the floor, including each front court position, which can even include guarding smaller wings on the perimeter over time, as he matures physically. He is a solid shooter from mid-range but does not yet possess much range on hsi shot, and is at his best from 15 - 18 feet. He is a very good ball handler and passer for his size, and likes to handle the basketball in the open court, where he pushes the basketball up the floor to the open man. He runs the floor exceptionally well for his size, and is a very good finisher that has improve in this area, and has improved as an athlete over the last year.
Dhal is a good defender that uses his length to affect and change shots, and is a good shotblocker with good timing. He is also an active rebounder that competes hard for loose balls and putbacks - some of his best attributes.
Dhal is a promising prospect that should see a rise in our 2021 Class Player Rankings, as he is improving a great deal and is a rare find in the class for college coaches to take a hard look at. While he looks much older as a college prospect physically, he does had a huge amount of upside as a player, as a result of his size and length, and as he continues to add size and strength to his very thin frame, he should see serious improvement as a player and college prospect.
I will continue to follow Dhal's progress and improvement as a college prospect closely over the next year, and look for him to gain recruiting momentum very soon.
