One of Arizona high school basketball’s most accomplished and respected coaches, Sam Duane Jr., has officially stepped down as the Head Coach of Perry High School - ending an historic chapter that saw him lead two powerhouse programs to statewide dominance.

Duane, who led Perry to four consecutive state championships, leaves behind a legacy of excellence, discipline, and development. Prior to his time at Perry, he turned Corona del Sol High School into a dynasty, also guiding them to (4) consecutive state titles from 2012 to 2015 and solidifying the program’s place in Arizona basketball history.

His overall coaching record stands at an incredible 494 wins and 204 losses, with (8) State Championship appearances and (9) Final Four runs. Those numbers place him among the all-time elite coaches in Arizona high school basketball history.

Duane’s success at both schools wasn’t just about winning, it was also about building culture. At Corona del Sol, he helped develop future college and professional players and established a winning standard that lasted beyond his tenure. At Perry, he duplicated the feat, transforming the Pumas into a perennial powerhouse and a national contender, especially in recent years with the emergence of superstar Koa Peat, a McDonald’s All-American and 2025 Gatorade Arizona Player of the Year.

His decision to step down was announced on March 25, 2025, following Perry’s fourth straight title run. Duane will now take on a district-level position with Mesa Public Schools, signaling a shift in his career toward educational leadership.

Duane’s departure leaves a massive void at Perry, where his influence helped create one of the strongest high school basketball programs in the country. But his legacy will endure—not just in the banners and the wins, but in the countless lives he’s impacted and the culture of excellence he established.

As Arizona high school basketball looks to the future, Sam Duane Jr.’s impact will continue to loom large, a reminder of what’s possible when vision, leadership, and a commitment to doing things the right way all come together.
