It has been a very interesting road over the last (8) months for ultra-athletic, 6-foot-4 sophomore guard De'Vontes Cobbs. After a terrific freshman season for himself last season at Shadow Mountain High School, as he helped lead the Matadors to their fourth-consecutive state title, Cobbs has been on the move consistently. After playing for multiple club programs during the summer and also changing high schools several times, he is back to where it all began - playing for legendary Head Coach Mike Bibby again, but this time while playing for national prep power Hillcrest Prep.
Bibby recently took over the head coaching position for a loaded Hillcrest Prep program, and so it was just a matter of time for Bibby to make his imprint, as he has transformed the coaching philosophy at the program - raising the overall level of defensive intensity for this year's group. The addition of Cobbs to the program, a super athletic slasher and open court finisher, will help the Hillcrest program this season, as he plays passing lanes at a high level, and is as quick and bouncy a prospect as there is in the West.
Cobbs rejoins Bibby now at Hillcrest Prep, after he first left Shadow Mountain in the spring and decided to move to AZ Compass Prep. He then left Compass for Mayfair High School (CA), where he spent the beginning of this school year, before electing to return back to Phoenix, just in time for the start to the Hillcrest season.
A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Cobbs is coming off an excellent performance this spring and summer on the club circuit, where he played at a very high level against stiff opposition at his age group with the Arizona Supreme, and then with NBA superstar Lebron Jame's club program.
Cobbs already possesses division-I offers from Arizona State, West Virginia, SMU and Florida.
Cobbs is regarded among the top 2022 prospects in the country and will join fellow nationally elite 2022 Class member prospects 6-foot-9 sophomore prospect Sadraque Nganga and 6-foot-4 sophomore guard Dorell Thomas @ Hillcrest Prep.
Arizona Hoop Review Scouting Report: Cobbs is an electric guard prospect that is capabe of playing both guard positions on the floor, and is a serious proven scorer. While able to play several positions on the floor, especially as he matures physically, Cobbs is at his best as a pure scorer and slasher and finisher. He can score in bunches from all angles of the floor, while slashing to the basket and finishing strong and dunking the basketball in fine fashion over defenders, which he seems to do in every game. Cobbs is a playmaker also with the ball in his hands and plays with a very high motor. He is a good shooter with range on his shot, and is also an active rebounder for his size. He is a good ball handler and passer that pushes the basketball up the floor. An excellent, lengthy defender that plays passing lanes and defends all over the floor. A strong on-the-ball defender also, his best attribute as a prospect. Has excellent value to any team he plays for, as he does not need plays to make plays - for himself or others.
