Standing at 6-foot-10 and 225 pounds, sophomore standout Darius Wabbington is already one of the most elite and intriguing prospects in the nation for the 2027 class. The gifted sophomore post player from Sunnyslope High School helped lead his team to a runner-up finish in the prestigious Open Division State Championship this past season, showcasing why he is a future superstar.
Sunnyslope finished with an impressive 21-9 overall record in Arizona’s top 6A Division and looks primed for even greater success next year, with Wabbington anchoring the interior. With so much talent returning, and with Darius expected to take another major leap forward, Sunnyslope should again be a serious contender for the Open Division State Championship.
Wabbington’s combination of size, skill, and mobility is something rarely seen in Arizona, a state known for producing talented perimeter players, but not often big men of his caliber. Uniquely, Darius is homegrown, not an out-of-state transplant, making his rise even more special for Arizona basketball fans.
Coming from strong basketball bloodlines, Darius’s father, Derek Wabbington, played professionally and starred at the University of Wyoming, while his mother was also an excellent athlete with size and athleticism. Given his genetics and recent growth, Darius is expected to grow to over seven feet tall, further elevating his stock nationally.
Despite his size, Wabbington is very agile, runs the floor extremely well, and plays with excellent fundamentals. Over the past couple of years, he has transformed physically - trimming down, becoming quicker, and developing a more explosive, polished game. His advanced skill-set, including soft touch around the basket, strong footwork, and an improving perimeter shot, makes him a nightmare matchup for opponents.
National analysts have taken notice, as Darius is rated among the Top 20 prospects nationally in the 2027 class by ESPN. He’s also a key piece for the loaded Arizona Unity Nike-EYBL program, where he has been a standout performer from the moment he stepped onto the court, notably making a strong impression at the current Nike EYBL Session I event in Arizona this weekend. Wabbington was a standout performer on Day one of the event.
Wabbington has already drawn early scholarship offers from powerhouse programs such as Louisville, UCLA, Washington, Maryland, Arizona State, LSU, Cal and Cal State Northridge, and many more schools are expected to join the race soon. His recruitment is poised to become one of the most competitive in the nation for the 2027 class.
With two more years of high school basketball still ahead, and his best basketball clearly still in front of him, Darius Wabbington is well on his way to becoming a household name nationally. We look forward to following his development closely, as he continues to rise toward becoming one of the elite post prospects in America.
