Corona Del Sol High School’s ultra-talented 6-foot-1, 170-pound sophomore point guard prospect Alex Barcello is having a terrific sophomore campaign for himself - raising many eyebrows in the state amongst basketball enthusiasts. Barcello has quickly gone from a young contributor for the Aztecs last season, to the team's leader and catalyst this season. In fact, there are some that believe that Barcello could now be the best individual player in the state.
This week, Barcello did his part in proving to the state just how good he really is, after he poured in a career-high 51 points in his team's high-scoring 106-92 victory over Perry HS this week. In the game, Arizona State commit, sophomore guard Markus Howard, another elite 2017 prospect, scored a team-high 47 points in the loss.
With Howard receiving much attention this summer for his early commitment to the Sun Devils, the question now becomes whether Barcello will also decide to commit early or wait until his senior season. The gifted 2017 prospect will definitely has many options for himself, as this week Barcello received another high-major division-I offer - this time from ASU rival, the University of Arizona Wildcats.
Barcello has also received division-I scholarship offers already from the University of Virginia, another high-major division-I offer, and Grand Canyon University, and will look to begin to garner many more offers over time. Barcello is also receiving strong interest from West Virginia, California-Berkley and Saint Mary’s, with many high-major division-I college programs looking to get involved.
Barcello is a terrific young budding star guard prospect with many high-major division-I college programs are already in hot pursuit of him. Barcello has a chance to become one of the best guard prospects to come out of the state in some time, and with continued development and hard work, he should become a serious nationally ranked prospect over time that will receive much national attention from scouts and media abroad.
He has tremendous work ethic and has a professional approach to the game that is not often seen by players his age. I have been very impressed with this young man’s ability to play the game, and also how he carries himself on and off the floor.
Barcello will only continue to improve a great deal over time, and I look for him to be one of the hottest prospects in the country over his next 2 years of high school basketball. It is still unclear as to when Barcello will make his college decision, but I do not expect him to make a rapid decision as Howard did. Look for Barcello to take his time in the recruiting process and make a much later decision for himself.
Myself and our staff will continue to follow the college recruitment of Barcello closely throughout his recruiting process, and expect this young man to become a special player over time. He looks to already be off to an amazing start to his young career.
Recruiting Notes: Corona Del Sol's superstar 6-foot-10 freshman post Marvin Bagley Jr. has also received a scholarship offer from the University of Arizona as well, and this week UCLA extended an offer to the gifted 2018 prospect. While Bagley will eventually gain an offer from every high-major division-I college program in the country over time, each offer seems to be greatly appreciated from the Bagley family.
