Central Arizona JC’s 6-foot-6, 195-pound sophomore forward Lonnie Pearson was among the best basketball talents in the conference this past season, after helping lead the team to a 19-10 overall record and a 12-8 record in the conference. While being our pre-season favorite to win the conference last season, the team would finish fifth in the ACCAC. Pearson, a native of Seattle, Washington, had a solid season for first year head coach Jordan Dreiling. While not putting up major numbers this season, Pearson was a nice talent and among the most versatile prospects in the conference. I caught up with Dreiling this week and…

Glendale Junior College is coming off another subpar season, after finishing with an 11-18 overall record on the season and a 7-13 record in conference play in the Arizona Community College Athletic Association (ACCAC) this past season. As a result, former head coach Dave Hodges decided to resign and the school introduced it’s new head coach recently – Damin Lopez. With Lopez taking over and looking to rebuild the program, the Gauchos will look to gain immediate help next season from it’s small group of returning players. While the core group of players from the 2011-2012 season were very talented, the team struggled to…
Westview High School had one of the state’s most talented teams this season and it showed as they posted a strong 23-7 overall record throughout the 2011-2012 boy’s high school basketball season. Among the top teams in the state’s tough Division-I Class this season, the Knights would eventually fall in the second round of the state playoffs after a 73-64 loss to Brophy Prep. A major reason for the team’s success this season was the strong and consistent play of 6-foot-1, 155-pound senior guard Kevin Davis. A talented combo-guard prospect for the Knights this season and head coach Francisco Villa, Davis led his…

As we prepare to begin releasing our players rankings for boys in the state of Arizona, we have taken into account the recent individual performances from the high school season, and also each player’s performance throughout this spring’s evaluation period. We will be releasing position rankings for the 2013 and 2014 classes, and will release an overall player ranking list for the 2015 class for the boys in the state. Many players have really helped themselves this spring and will look to make early jumps in the player rankings. While already holding a high ranking in the 2013 class, such players as Basha…

Hamilton High School is coming off an 18-11 record from this past season (2011-2012) – reaching the second round of the state playoffs, before losing to Pinnacle HS (65-57). As a result of the high school season, head coach Kevin Hartwig saw the emergence this season of 6-foot-1, 155-pound junior point guard Nate Walker. While the Huskies were very well-balanced this past season, Walker emerged into a very integral part of the Huskies’ attack. Walker averaged modest numbers this season, but was very well balanced in his efforts – averaging 7.7 points, 3.8 assists and 3.7 rebounds per/game. Walker shot 47%…
Former St. Mary’s High School graduate and Westwind Prep post-grad George Matthews has found a new college home. After signing a division-I scholarship in the fall of 2010 with the University of Utah and spending a freshman season under first-year head coach Larry Krystkowiak, Matthews got his release from the PAC-12 program last month. After mulling over his options, Matthews has decided to sign a national letter of intent with the University of Texas-San Antonio and head coach Brooks Thompson. UTSA assistant coach Jeff Renegar was instrumental in the recruitment of Matthews, after developing a close personal relationship with Matthews since his high school days.…
Many tourists travel every year up to northern Arizona to see the Grand Canyon – one of the world’s great wonders. Little did anyone know that high school basketball was being played very near by and at a high level. Very soon, college coaches will be making the trip as well, but to take a peek at one of the state’s top young prospects in the 2014 class. Grand Canyon High School’s 6-foot-5, 190-pound sophomore forward Joey Bankston has quickly developed into one of the state’s top young prospects, while still being an almost unknown prospect within the state among local basketball…
In between watching a boys basketball tournament throughout the weekend, I was also able to catch much of the action on Sunday at this year’s Venom Classic – held at Sierra Linda High School and hosted by tournament director Carolyn Jones. Jones assembled a lot of top young girls’ talent in this weekend’s event, and while I was unable to observe much of the top upperclassman prospects in the event, I was able to catch some of the action from the 17U level on Sunday. Here are the top prospects that I observed on the day in the Venom Classic … Ashley Lomavaya 5-6 …
