The basketball world was shaken this week by the tragic passing of former Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke, who reportedly passed away on May 11 at the age of 29. According to reports released this week, authorities responded to a medical emergency at a residence in the San Fernando Valley area, where Clarke was later pronounced dead. Reports have stated that the incident is currently being investigated as a possible overdose.
For Arizona basketball fans, the loss hits especially close to home. Clarke was a graduate of Desert Vista High School in Phoenix, Arizona, where he first began establishing himself as a talented, but under-recruited basketball prospect. Despite not receiving the national recruiting attention many elite prospects receive coming out of high school, Clarke continued to work relentlessly to improve his game and prove doubters wrong. After graduating from Desert Vista in 2014, Clarke began his college basketball career at San Jose State University, where he quickly emerged as one of the top young players in the Mountain West Conference. His athleticism, energy, shot-blocking ability, and relentless motor helped him become one of the most productive players in the conference.
Clarke later transferred to Gonzaga University, where he elevated himself into one of the premier players in all of college basketball. During his standout season at Gonzaga, Clarke helped lead the Bulldogs deep into the NCAA Tournament and became nationally recognized for his elite defensive play, efficiency around the basket, rebounding, and explosive athleticism.
His tremendous rise ultimately led to him being selected in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies, where he would spend (7) seasons building a successful NBA career.
Throughout his NBA career, Clarke became known as one of the league’s most energetic and efficient frontcourt players. His ability to defend multiple positions, rebound, finish around the basket, and provide toughness and intensity made him a valuable piece of the Grizzlies organization for years. Clarke earned NBA All-Rookie First Team honors during the 2019-20 season and helped Memphis become one of the Western Conference’s rising playoff contenders over the years.
Beyond basketball, Clarke’s journey served as a major inspiration for young Arizona basketball prospects everywhere. He proved that players do not need to be heavily recruited out of high school to eventually achieve greatness. Through hard work, determination, and belief in himself, Clarke rose from an under-the-radar Arizona high school prospect into a successful NBA player who achieved tremendous success on basketball’s biggest stage.

His story, perseverance, and accomplishments will continue to motivate Arizona basketball players for years to come.
