The state of Arizona was well represented on one of high school basketball’s biggest preseason stages this weekend, as many of the state’s top programs and prospects traveled to Las Vegas for the 7th Annual Border League. The massive event, held October 2–4, once again brought together many of the premier high school and prep programs in the country. More than (200) college coaches attended the event a year ago, and the 2026 edition featured games across ESPN, NBA TV and BallerTV platforms, providing tremendous national exposure. The state of Arizona had a significant presence throughout the event, including nationally recognized prep programs AZ Compass Prep, Dream City Christian Prep and Bella Vista Prep, along with traditional high school programs such as Sunnyslope, Basha, Perry, Deer Valley, Liberty, Chandler and others.
While complete statistics from every game have not yet been made publicly available as of Sunday afternoon, several Arizona prospects clearly separated themselves with impressive performances and strong reviews from national evaluators.
One of the biggest performances of the entire weekend came from Sunnyslope High School senior post Darius Wabbington. The talented 6-foot-11 prospect exploded for 33 points, while knocking down seven three-pointers on opening night, immediately becoming one of the major stories of the event. National recruiting coverage specifically highlighted Wabbington’s dominant performance.
Wabbington has continued to develop into one of the most intriguing prospects nationally in Arizona’s loaded 2027 class. His combination of size, perimeter shooting ability and improving offensive versatility makes him an extremely difficult matchup. His Border League performance only added to the tremendous recruiting momentum surrounding him.
Few programs nationally entered the weekend with more talent than AZ Compass Prep. AZ Compass was again featured prominently on the national stage, including a Saturday matchup against Los Explorers carried through NBA platforms and a Sunday showcase against Southeastern Prep Academy. Five-star senior DeMarcus Henry remained one of the biggest attractions in the building. Henry, one of the elite prospects nationally in the 2027 class, continued to draw considerable attention from college coaches and national recruiting analysts throughout the weekend. His combination of size, physical tools, scoring ability and defensive versatility continues to separate him from his peers.
His recruitment was also a major storyline in Las Vegas, with Henry discussing the programs pursuing him while at the event. AZ Compass also brought considerable depth to Las Vegas, further demonstrating why the program is once again expected to compete at a very high level nationally.
Dream City Christian Prep also had several prospects generate attention throughout the weekend. Among them was talented Dream City 2028 point guard prospect Mateen Cleaves Jr. who continued to enhance his national reputation. The talented 6-foot-4 combo guard from the 2028 class was also identified among Saturday’s standout performers. Cleaves possesses an impressive combination of size, strength, scoring ability and feel for the game. Already regarded as one of the nation's premier young prospects, his performance against national competition provided another opportunity to demonstrate why his recruitment continues to grow.
Bella Vista Prep also featured one of the state’s premier national prospects in 6-foot-10 senior Paul Osaruyi. Osaruyi was identified among Friday’s players who caught the attention of evaluators at the Border League. The long and athletic forward continues to make significant strides in his development and has become one of the most heavily recruited prospects in the country.
Osaruyi entered the Border League immediately following an official visit to Kentucky, while programs including Kansas, West Virginia, Arkansas, BYU, North Carolina, Houston and UCLA have also been involved in his recruitment. His combination of length, athleticism and upside makes him one of the most intriguing frontcourt prospects in the country.
Millennium High School standout Adan Diggs also continued his outstanding rise. The explosive guard has developed into one of the most dynamic offensive prospects in Arizona. Diggs can create off the dribble, score in transition, finish through contact and make perimeter shots, while his confidence and competitive approach continue to distinguish him. Against another loaded Border League field, Diggs once again showed that he belongs among the premier prospects in his class.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the weekend was not simply the performance of one player or one program. It was the overall strength of basketball in Arizona. AZ Compass Prep, Dream City Christian and Bella Vista Prep continue to give the state a major presence on the national prep basketball landscape, while programs such as Sunnyslope, Basha, Perry, Deer Valley and numerous others continue producing prospects capable of competing against high-level players from throughout the country.
The Border League has quickly become one of the premier preseason events in America, and Arizona basketball was once again right in the middle of the action.
