One of the biggest national recruiting storylines in the 2027 class continues to center around AZ Compass Prep’s DeMarcus Henry. The 6-foot-8 senior forward has developed into one of the premier prospects in America and is currently rated as the No. 2 overall prospect nationally by ESPN. Henry is also regarded among the nation’s elite prospects by the other major recruiting services. Coming off an outstanding spring and summer, Henry saw his recruitment explode as college coaches from many of the nation’s premier programs followed him closely throughout the evaluation periods. His combination of size, athleticism, versatility and competitive motor has made him one of the most coveted prospects in the country.
Earlier this summer, Henry narrowed his recruitment to eight finalists - North Carolina, Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Ohio State, BYU and UConn. Then Duke University entered the picture. The Blue Devils extended Henry a scholarship offer after his initial list had already been announced, a significant development considering Duke had long been regarded as one of Henry’s favorite programs growing up. Despite the significance of the Duke offer, Henry’s recruitment has since continued to take shape in another direction.
Henry has now completed three official visits, traveling to Louisville, UConn and Arkansas during September. His UConn visit took place September 9–11, followed by his Arkansas visit September 18–20.
Henry spoke very positively about his experience at UConn, particularly the intensity of the Huskies’ practices and Head Coach Dan Hurley’s approach to player development. Henry said that getting better and being pushed as both a player and person are important to him. That makes UConn particularly interesting as Henry moves deeper into his decision-making process.
While there has been considerable discussion nationally about Arkansas being difficult to beat in Henry’s recruitment, I am now hearing from circles close to Henry that UConn could be emerging as a serious factor, and potentially the program to watch. That should not be interpreted as Henry having made a decision. At this point, there is no publicly confirmed leader in his recruitment, and Henry has given no indication publicly that he has settled on a college destination.
What is clear is that this has become one of the more intriguing recruiting battles in the country. Henry brings tremendous versatility to the floor. He has described himself as a player capable of playing positions one through four, while impacting the game as a scorer, defender and facilitator. At 6-foot-8, his length and athleticism allow him to defend multiple positions, while his ability to attack from the perimeter gives him significant offensive upside. More importantly, Henry competes. He plays with an excellent motor, works on both ends of the floor and has earned his position among the nation’s elite prospects through continued development, hard work and dedication to his craft.
Whatever program ultimately lands Henry will be adding an elite-level talent with the ability to make an immediate impact at the college level. I expect Henry’s recruitment to become increasingly interesting as the fall progresses, and a decision could begin to come into focus as he evaluates his options.
Before making that decision, Henry will return this fall to an absolutely loaded AZ Compass Prep roster that has the talent to compete for a national championship on the Nike EYBL Scholastic circuit. Henry’s size, versatility, athleticism and overall motor are expected to make him a centerpiece of one of the nation’s premier prep school programs this season. With tremendous talent surrounding him, AZ Compass Prep should once again be among the most heavily watched programs in America and have an opportunity to compete at the highest level nationally. For Henry, his senior season will provide another opportunity to further establish himself as one of the premier prospects in high school basketball while also preparing himself for the next level.
Arizona Preps will continue to follow DeMarcus Henry’s recruitment closely and provide recruiting updates as they continue to develop.
