Sunnyslope’s 6-foot-11 senior is down to Arizona, Illinois and Indiana as his highly anticipated college decision draws closer
One of Arizona’s premier prospects in the 2027 class is getting closer to making his college decision. Sunnyslope High School five-star post prospect Darius Wabbington has officially trimmed his recruitment to three schools - Arizona, Illinois and Indiana - after previously narrowing his recruitment to six programs. The 6-foot-11 senior has taken official visits to all three finalists, giving Wabbington and his family an opportunity to take an extensive look at each program before making what will undoubtedly be a difficult decision. All three represent tremendous opportunities for Wabbington, who has developed into one of the nation’s most heavily recruited post prospects.
ESPN currently ranks Wabbington as the No. 9 overall prospect nationally in the 2027 class, while other major recruiting services also have him firmly among the nation’s elite prospects. At this point, it remains unclear which program, if any, has emerged as the leader. Indiana, Illinois and Arizona have each invested significant time recruiting Wabbington, and all three programs see the talented big man as an important piece of their future.
From my perspective, however, Arizona will be extremely difficult to beat. The Wildcats’ coaching staff has done an excellent job recruiting Wabbington over an extended period, and the opportunity for him to remain close to home could be very attractive for Darius and his family. That does not mean Arizona is necessarily leading his recruitment. Wabbington has shown legitimate interest in both Illinois and Indiana, and his decision to take official visits to both programs, and ultimately include them among his final three schools, demonstrates just how seriously he is considering each opportunity.
Illinois and Indiana both believe Wabbington would be an excellent fit for their respective programs, making this a fascinating recruitment to follow as he moves closer to a decision.
I have personally watched Darius’ development for many years, and my connection to the Wabbington family goes back even further. I personally coached Darius’ father, Derrick Wabbington, during his high school career. The elder Wabbington would go on to have an excellent collegiate career at the University of Wyoming before eventually playing professionally with the Harlem Globetrotters. Basketball talent certainly runs throughout the Wabbington family. Darius also has talented younger siblings coming through the basketball ranks, which makes the opportunity to potentially remain close to home even more intriguing from a family standpoint.
Darius himself has been regarded as a special prospect since he was very young. Over the years, I have watched him continue to grow physically, mature and develop his game. Now, as he prepares for his senior season at Sunnyslope, he is beginning to come into his own as a player and move closer to realizing the enormous potential that has surrounded him for years.
Wabbington’s recruitment will not be the only major storyline surrounding him this season. Sunnyslope should once again have one of the nation's premier high school basketball teams, and Wabbington will be at the center of the Vikings’ Open Division and potential National Championship aspirations.
At 6-foot-11 with his combination of size, length, mobility, skill and continued development, Wabbington has positioned himself for a tremendous senior season. Where he plays his college basketball remains the big question. With (3) outstanding opportunities, and three programs that have made Wabbington a major recruiting priority, I expect Wabbington could make his decision relatively soon, although he certainly has the option of allowing the process to continue.
For Division-I basketball prospects, the NCAA’s 2026 Early Signing Period runs from Wednesday, November 11 through Wednesday, November 18. NCAA legislation establishes the basketball early period as beginning on the second Wednesday in November and continuing through the following Wednesday.
Whether Wabbington makes his announcement before that period or takes additional time remains to be seen. What is certain is that one of the nation’s premier 2027 big men is now down to three finalists for his college decision - Arizona, Illinois and Indiana. And wherever Darius Wabbington ultimately decides to continue his basketball career, I believe he has an excellent future ahead of him.
I will continue to follow this recruitment closely, and bring you recruiting updates as they continue to develop.
