The state of Arizona has become a hotbed for basketball talent across the country, as a result of the developed basketball culture, and the many elite national prospects brought to the state consistently through prep school programs in the state. AZ Compass Prep is a national basketball power and has been for many years now. The program consistently brings in high level and future pro prospects through the leadership of Pete Kaffey annually, and this year's version of the AZ Compass Prep National Team is absolutely loaded with top-rated national talent. While this year's group is definitely young, and highly comprised of elite 2026 prospects, the next two seasons for AZ Compass will be legendary.
This year's National Team for the program is filled with high-major division-I talent, but no prospect is more promising than 6-foot-10, 190-pound junior Miikka Muurinen. A native of Finland, Muurinen came to AZ Compass Prep this summer and immediately blew up nationally - rising from a completely unknown prospect to a Top 5 national ranking with ESPN and 247 Sports. Muurinen's impressive showing at the Nike EYBL Peach Jam this summer, changed the game, as the 6-foot-10 versatile forward averaged 17.8 points per-game, while knocking down more than 60% of his shot attempts from the floor. Following his performance at the Peach Jam, Muurinen was tagged as the "biggest riser" following the club circuit's biggest event.
Muurinen is an absolute pro talent and a potential future NBA Lottery pick - another future NBA prospect for the AZ Compass Prep program. Still a mere junior, Muurinen is a very lengthy and skilled stretch 4-man that can play multiple positions on the floor, and has excellent versatility as a player. He is a tremendous talent with pro level experience before entering the national prep school ranks, and plays with a serious mean streak that makes his a serious competitor on the floor. He is still learning to play through his challenges on the court, but he has the intangibles as a player that you cannot teach. He is very skilled and can make shots from anywhere on the floor, with his pure shooting stroke that allows him to catch and shoot, shoot from the standstill position or make shots on the move. He can score from all (3) levels, and also plays very big inside and around the paint, which can lead to early foul trouble at times. He is an active rebounder and shot-blocker and runs the floor exceptional well, and is a very strong finisher in the open floor or in the half-court set. A future pro.
Currently, Muurinen has a nice list of offers for himself, with many of them coming over the summer. He will certainly receive loads of more college offers this prep season and in the up-and-coming spring, in preparation for his final season next year. He has received offers thus far from North Carolina (pictured), Duke, Kentucky, UCLA, Arkansas, Michigan, Alabama, Utah, BYU, Cincinnati, Illinois and Texas Tech.
Muurinen is coming off an excellent performance in AZ Compass Prep's big win this weekend over a very good Brewster Academy National (8-1) team, 58-54 - handing Brewster Academy their first defeat of the season. Muurinen turned in one of his best performances of the season in the victory.
Prospects such as AZ Compass Prep's Muurinen, and many others in the state, have taken Arizona basketball to another level, as they have put Arizona basketball in the forefront of the recruiting efforts of many college programs across the country. Muurinen will bring loads of recruiting attention to the state over the next year or so. Whichever college program ultimately lands this young man, will be getting a future pro-level talent, as you rarely see a prospect emerge and make as big of a recruiting splash as Muurinen has made this summer and fall.
I look forward to watching him continue to develop as a player and prospect over the next year, as it is very rare that we get to see such a talented prospect compete on the Arizona basketball hardwood. This year is the year of the Koa Peat sweepstakes for the college programs still remaining in the recruiting hunt, but next year will certainly be the year for Miikka Muurinen.
