St. Mary’s High School (16-12) advanced to the Final Four of the 4A State Playoffs on Friday evening with a big 78-54 second round playoff victory over Salpointe Catholic High School. St. Mary’s received a balanced offensive attack on the evening to lead them to victory. 6-foot-7 senior Caspian Jones finished with a game-high 24 points in the win. Jones was selected as the Region Player of the Year and Region Offensive Player of the Year.
St. Mary’s also received strong performances in the win from 6-foot junior guard Brody Postorino (15 points), 6-foot-6 senior Arteus Jefferson (13 points) and 6-foot-11 junior Cam Williams (11 points).
Salpointe Catholic (16-11) had a nice season and also had a very well balanced attack in the game, led by the play of 6-foot-2 senior guard Isaac Lamb (18 points) and 6-foot-4 junior Omar Rasul (16 points).
St. Mary’s will now advance the 4A Final Four on Monday evening, where they will face superstar senior guard Uriah Tenette (UCSD signee) and Prescott High School in an exciting rematch of an earlier season contest, which Prescott won in fine fashion, 68-51. St. Mary's will look to avenge their earlier season loss at Prescott, which was the opening game of the high school season. Prescott will look to prove it was not a fluke the first time, and knock off St, Mary's again. This time, Prescott will be looking to defeat the Knights on the way to their big goal of winning a 4A State Championship.
Prescott will be riding the exploits of superstar senior guard Uriah Tenette in the match-up with St. Mary's and the remainder of the season, if they are to win this year's state title. Tenette was unstoppable in the previous match-up with St. Mary's, and he has gone on to be unstoppable for all of his opposition this high school season. Tenette is one of my very favorite players and prospects to watch over my (30) year career. He will finish his high school career as one of the Top 5 scorers in Arizona basketball history! It has truly been a pleasure to watch him play this season, and also develop as a player over the past several years. Tenette is among the very best basketball players in America - no longer just the best player in Northern Arizona. He deserves the very best this season, after the senior season that he has given us. He will be very difficult especially for St. Mary's to slow down, let alone stop. This could be another epic performance from Tenette on Monday evening, especially with the support of the Prescott fans and student body. Get your popcorn ready!
