With the Christmas holiday approaching, one gift that Marcos De Niza High School head coach Jermaine Whitaker received early this season was the strong play of 5-foot-8 senior guard/forward Sophia Anaya. One of the premier sleeper prospects in the state's 2014 class, Anaya is having a strong senior season for her team - leading Marcos to a 11-4 overall record this season.
Anaya has led Marcos to contention among the state's top teams in the Division-II Class, and is doing it in style - averaging 14.9 points and 4.5 assists per/game this season, and pouring in a game-high 24 points in her team's loss to undefeated Desert Vista HS (12-0) recently.
Anaya is a very skilled guard/forward prospect with an excellent shooting stroke with unlimited range on her shot and a quick release. Her ability to score the basketball is among the best in the state, and I believe that this young lade deserves division-I attention. Anaya is skilled enough to play several positions on the floor and is able to make plays for herself and others - making her very difficult to defend.
After asking Anaya who might be currently recruiting her, Anaya advised me that she currently has received some college interest but currently has no offers on the table at this time.
Look for Anaya to gain considerable college interest throughout the remainder of the high school season, as she is one of the top sleeper prospects in the state.
