Now that the Spring Evaluation period has come to a close, and as we begin the busy summer months of June and July, here are some excellent sleeper prospects that emerged during the spring that I was very impressed with that college coaches need to know about . . .
Mayen Maen 6-7 JR SF/PF AZ Compass Prep - 2021 Class
Maen (pictured) was easily one of the best overall sleeper prospects that I saw this spring, as he is a versatile prospect with that is able to play inside and out. He has a very good overall skill level that is advanced for his age, as he has a nice skillset combined with good length of body and athleticis. He is a solid shooter of the basketball, but still needs to add range and consistency from longer ranges on the floor. He is an active rebounder that rebounds outside of his area, and is also a good shotblocker that keeps balls in play. A good low post scorer, and can also turn and face from the perimeter and make plays around his defender. A strong finisher at the rim. Plays well above the rim when he needs to. Runs the floor very well and is a good finisher in transition. A good defender. Has a bright future ahead of him and is an excellent sleeper prospect.
Keiren Brown 6-4 JR PG/SG St. Mary's HS - 2021 Class
Brown is a nice talent for the future with a very strong body physically and a good handle of the basketball. He is a very big guard prospect that plays the point guard position full time for St. Mary's HS Head Coach Damin Lopez. Was very impressive in his play this spring, as he has a very good overall skill level and approach to the game. A good mid-range performer that is able to make plays off the dribble and set up his teammates for scoring opportunities, while also able to make plays for himself. Has somee range on his shot, and as he develops his range and consistency, he will really blossom as a player. Sees the floor and is a playmaker. A good driver and finisher. Has good overall toughness as a player. Pushes the ball up the floor with the pass. A strong rebounder from the guard position. A good one-the-ball defender. An excellent sleeper prospect for the future and from the 2021 Class.
Jorden Josephs 6-5 SR SF Chaparral HS - 2020 Class
Josephs will lead the 6A State Champion runner-ups next season a great deal. After having a strong junior season, he will be relied on heavily next high school season to perform for his team, after the departure of (3) of the team's other top performers to transfer. Josephs is an athletic wing prospect with nice length on his body and very sneaky athleticism that allows him to take off the floor quickly and finish high above the rim almost at will. A good finisher, slasher and open court player. A scrappy performer that can score without the basketball in his hands - a nice asset to any team. A very active rebounder. Plays hard and has very good work ethic.
Leroy Williams 6-6 JR PF Buckeye HS - 2021 Class
Williams is a strong and rugged rebounder and inside presence that finishes hard around the basket and does not mind physical contact. Gets to the free-throw line quite often and makes plays for his team. A stretch 4-man that is able to also play away from the basket. A left-hander. Competes hard. A solid shooter from mid-range. Runs the floor hard. A good low-post scorer with good footwork. A strong finisher.
Timothy Cochrane 6-5 JR SG/SF Williams Field HS - 2021 Class
A bigger wing prospect with good overall size for the position. Has a good overall skillset and is quick off the dribble for his size. Has a good shooting stroke with range and is able to set himself up for strong drives as a result of his ability to make shots from the perimeter. A good passer that sees the floor and is unselfish with his passes to his teammates. Can score with either hand around the basket. Active rebounder. Solid defender. Runs the floor well. Intriguing prospect.
Tanner Crawford 6-7 JR PF Williams Field HS - 2021 Class
A good sized stretch 4-man that runs the floor hard and is a good finisher in the open floor. A good finisher around the basket that attacks the rim and does not mind physical contact. A good rebounder with good toughness. Still raw offensively but is developing and has some tools to build on. Solid post player offensively. A capable shotblocker. Has good potential and some upside.
Montez Taylor 5-9 JR PG Williams Field HS - 2021 Class
Taylor is a pure point guard prospect with a nice overall feel and understanding of the game. A very good scorer with a nice overall mid-range game. Needs to add more range on his shot and consistency to raise his overall level of play. An excellent driver and finisher that gets into the lane at will, and keeps pressure on the defense. An excellent ball handler and passer that knows how to run a team. A strong on-the-ball defender with quick hands and feet. Pushes the basketball up the floor. A very good PG prospect that competes.
Sabir Habeeb-Collins 6-1 SR PG/SG AZ Compass Prep - 2020 Class
A skilled left-hander with excellent athleticism and a knack for scoring the basketball. A good shooter with some range on his shot, but more of a scorer at this point in his young career. A good driver and finisher, and also slasher with good body control. A good ball handler. A good passer that sees the floor and advances the ball up the floor. Coming off a strong junior season in the CAA ranks. A good sleeper guard prospect for a smaller college program.
Travis Reynolds 6-5 FR PF Buena HS - 2022 Class
Reynolds is a stretch 4-man with an ability to play inside and out. He is fundamentally sound and has good footwork in the low post or on the perimeter, where he is a very good shooter of the basketball with range on his shot - much like his older brother who also played at Buena HS before him. Has a high basketball IQ. Still growing a great deal physically, and as he matures, he will become a much tougher rebounder and finisher around the basket. A good rebounder. A good low-post defender. A solid ball handler. A very good passer that is willing and sees the floor. A good low-post defender. Runs the floor well. Has promise for the future.
Mekhi Mason 6-2 SOPH SG Chandler HS - 2022 Class
Mason is a skilled and crafty guard prospect with good overall length on his body, and is still growing a great deal physically, so he could grow much more over the next two years of his high school career. Son of a coach. Has a high basketball IQ and plays with superior confidence on the floor. A good shooter that sets up his defender with his shooting stroke, and is able to make plays off the dribble. A playmaker. An active rebounder. A good defender with quick hands and length. Plays passing lanes. Good in the open floor. Will have a big junior season.
