In one of the first events of its kind, the Section 7 Basketball Event, put on by the Arizona Basketball Coaches Association, set what now should be the standard on high school organized live-period events. With over 300 hundred college coaches in attendance, the ABCA showcased a ridiculous amount of games and prospects.
With it virtually being impossible to take in all the action, here are the prospects who stood out that I had the opportunity to see . . .
Tyler Patterson, 6 ft 6, SG, 2020, Mount Si High School
Tyler is a player with good size on the high school level for the two guard. He proved to be a knockdown shooter who can come off of screens and shoot of the dribble. He has the size to shoot long range bombs over smaller defenders. I admire the confidence he shoots the ball with as every shot he took came with a confident stroke. The best shooter I saw at section 7.
Austin Cook, 6 ft 4, SG, 2020, Damien High School
Austin is a knock-down shooter with in-the-gym range. He plays with such heart as his team was outmatched in one of the matchups, but he kept battling to bring his squad back. For a knock-down shooter, he rebounds the ball at a high rate.
Vaughn Flowers, 6 ft 3, SG, 2020, Rolling Hills Prep
Vaughn puts relentless pressure on the defense with his driving ability and cutting ability. He finishes at the rim with an array of layups and floaters. Vaughn makes the game easy for himself with constant movement.
Benny Gealer, 6 ft, PG, 2022, Rolling Hills Prep
Ben is a sneaky quick guard with tight handle and the ability to get off his own shot. He heats up quick and isn’t gun shy when he’s feeling it. Ben has the ability to play the one or spread the floor at the two spot. He also can create for his teammates. With him being just a freshman, it will be fun to see how his recruitment plays out.
Tyrone "Ty Ty" Washington 6-4, Combo-Guard, 2020 Cesar Chavez HS
Tyrone is a big guard who has the ball in the string and can create for himself or others. He plays with such good pace and he controls his body well to be able to take advantage of his physical strength. It would be tough to find another player better at creating something out of nothing on the offensive end. Ty Ty is also a presence on the boards and really does a bit of everything for his squad.
Ricardo Sarmiento 6-1, PG, 2020 Cesar Chavez HS
Ricardo is a quick shifty guard who is always under control and uses his deadeye eye shooting to create off the dribble where he can finish in the lane with either hand. Ricardo has a knack for making the right play for his teammates, which in turn takes the pressure off of him as a scoring threat.
Isaiah Holm, 6 ft 8, C, 2020, Troy High School
Isaiah is a huge kid who can make plays on the block for himself or others. He’s a good post passer and uses position well. Isaiah excels and setting create screens and taking up a ton of space clogging the lane on his roll, which lead to a number of offensive rebounds for him.
Daishen Nix, 6 ft 5, PG, 2020, Trinity International Schools
Daishen is the definition of smooth. Offensively, Daishen can do it all, but where he excels most is at making his teammates better. As a lead guard he thrives at the decision-making aspect of the game. As a point guard, Daishen excels at rebounding and dominating smaller guards with his size. As a passer is where Daishen separates himself from other high major prospects. Simply put, he seems to see the game much faster than anyone else.
Luke Turner, 6 ft 6, PF, 2021, Rancho Christian
Luke is an extremely long player with good athleticism and elite shooting ability. He has very deep range and shoots with confidence every time. At his size, Luke still handles the ball with confidence and can score on virtually anyone.
Dominick Harris, 6 ft 4, PG, 2020 Rancho Christian
Dominick is a guard who has great size and is a tough guard for anyone. He constantly uses his ball handling ability to live in the lane which usually end with him drawing fouls. He is explosive of the bounce and very tough to sat in front of. He should be a fun watch at the next level as he is committed to Gonzaga.
Grady Lewis, 6 ft 7, PF, 2021, Sunnyslope High School
Grady (pictured) is a long athletic post player who plays with an incredibly high motor. He never takes a play off and constantly outworks whomever he’s matched up with. Grady uses his length and explosiveness to dominate the glass while showing touch on jump hooks when isolated in the post.
Kobe Sanders, 6 ft 6, PG/SG, 2020, Christian High School
Kobe is an extremely tall and lengthy guard who has no trouble creating for himself or others. His length makes it easy for him to grab rebounds and be a pest on the defensive end. Kobe seemed to be at his best when attacking the smaller defenders and taking advantage of his size and length.
