Day two of this year’s Reebok Breakout Camp was a good one on the campus of the University of Philadelphia in Philadelphia, PA. With a large amount of division-I college coaches in attendance for the entire day, camp participants played at a high level throughout the day - playing in three games and showing some fatigue toward the evening.
With several Arizona participants in action on the day, the performances of Poston Butte High School 6-foot-2 rising senior guard Jalen Richard and Chaparral HS 6-foot-8 rising senior post Joe Boyd highlighted the day's action.
Chaparral HS 6-foot-8 rising senior post Joe Boyd has been very good in this week's event and has raised his recruiting stock considerably with his performance. Boyd's play has been very consistent in each game and he has showed very good energy and toughness in each outing.
In an evening match-up, Boyd had his best performance of the camp, as he burst for 18 points in his team's loss. But it wasn't the game performance, but rather a quarter that defined Boyd's play in the game, as Boyd put up 14 big points in a quarter. Boyd's quarter included a three-pointer, a mid-range jump shot, two baskets in transition and a big-two handed dunk in transition. Boyd's aggressive style of play and nice skill level has raised many eyebrows of college coaches in attendance. Numerous East Coast schools are now in hot pursuit of the talented post prospect.
Boyd's best play of the day though included him hitting another 6-11 post player running down the floor with a nice forearm as the post player attempted to run to the low block in transition. The play resulted in a foul by Boyd, but showed the crowd of college coaches in attendance that Boyd was here to play.
When asked whether he and the opposing post player had exchanged words before the foul, Boyd replied, "No, I just felt like hitting him. I wanted to show him I was there."
Richard played very consistently on the day but had a breakout performance in the evening match-up when he exploded for 22 points in his team's win - a major scoring output in the Reebok event, where very few players score in double-figures. Richard knocked down several three-point shots and displayed a good overall ability to play the point position in the game. Numerous college coaches admired Richard's performance in the game, and several division-I coaches viewed Richard as a high-major guard prospect.
Weber State assistant coach Phil Beckner and Boise State assistant coach Dave Wojcik both made the trip to Philly to recruit the Arizona prospects in attendance.
